BURMESE GIRL UNDER THE STAR FLOWER TREE | FIELD NOTES

At Kuthodaw Pagoda, where the “World’s Largest Book” is housed, grow mature star flower trees, the blooms of which are made by locals into star flower chains for the Buddha or to wear in their hair.

This tree here is 120+ years old.

This image and more is featured in "Chasing Spirit," my upcoming book of photo essays from UST Publishing House in Sept.

BAREKNUCKLE GOLDEN BOY | FIELD NOTES

Lethwei fighter Shwe Yar Man poses at the Mandalay Indoor Stadium for World Lethwei Championship 7.

Shwe Yar Man, born in the year 2000 as Kyaw Lin Htet, started training for lethwei at age seven. This includes several years of training and non-commitment to in-ring competition.

His ring-name was given to him by his grandfather and consists of the word Shwe (gold) and Raman, the classical ethnonym for Mon.

Lethwei is bareknuckle kickboxing fought traditional Burmese style. That is, sans gloves
and with legal headbutts, like a grittier, more intense Muay Thai fight with the addition
of the head as the “ninth limb."

For decades, lethwei was overshadowed by Muay Thai, made popular through its prolific
use in modern MMA. However, lethwei predates even the early forms of the Thai art.

Burmese indigenous martial systems like lethwei and bando were historically employed by the armies of the Irrawady River kings to great effect in both tribal wars and against
foreign adversaries.

Depictions of lethwei fights abound on ancient Burmese temples showing fighters locked in combat ion sandpits as far back as the Pyu city-states in the early to mid-11th century, before even the Bagan Empire became ascendant. That makes lethwei almost 2,000 years old.

THE CHO DAN SINH BAZAAR | FIELD NOTES

Inside the popular War Surplus Market in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Known for its extensive collection of Vietnam War militaria and memorabilia, the labyrinthine bazaar abounds with vintage hardware, army surplus gear, and war relics ranging from reproductions to era-authentic equipment.

Always inspect items carefully if they're legitimate and caveat emptor.

WOMEN AT MANDALAY STREET PARADE | FIELD NOTES

A parade on the streets of Mandalay City. A majority of the Myanmar population, roughly 48 million, profess to follow Theravada Buddhism. Buddhist holidays abound and parades like the festival of Kathina draw huge crowds to the streets.

Traditional Burmese orchestras or saing waing usually accompany local festivals, rituals, and even pre-fight ceremonies, playing folk music to match the performances.

Just one of the many stories in both words and monochromes in "Chasing Spirit," my upcoming book of photo essays. Out from UST Publishing House on September 2026.
