Cebu Pacific Brings Brigada Eskwela Drive to Last Mile Schools

Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the Philippines’ leading carrier, has mobilized its entire group network for the nationwide kickoff of Brigada Eskwela 2026, reinforcing its commitment to education and community empowerment.

Volunteers from across CEB group, including airline operations (5J), ground handling provider 1Aviation, and aircraft maintenance company Aviation Partnership (Philippines) Corporation (Aplus), joined forces to help prepare public schools for the upcoming academic year.

As part of this year’s campaign, the carrier adopted three Last Mile Schools from the Department of Education’s (DepEd) priority list: Balakilong Integrated School in Batangas, Cadulawan Elementary School in Cebu, and Cogon Elementary School in Davao del Norte. Located in geographically isolated and underserved communities, the schools were selected to help ensure critical aid and support reach students who need it most.

Beyond volunteer efforts, the airline provided classroom cleaning and painting materials; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational packages; and monetary donation raised through contributions from CEB employees.

“The true measure of an airline is not only how many people it carries, but how many lives it helps move forward. Through Brigada Eskwela, our people came together to support schools in some of the country’s most underserved communities because every child deserves a safe place to learn, dream, and build a better future. At Cebu Pacific, we are proud to connect Filipinos not only through travel, but through acts of service that create lasting impact far beyond our flights,” said Felix Lopez, CEB Chief Human Resources Officer.

The initiative forms part of Juan Community, a broader Gokongwei Group program led by the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), which supports education programs nationwide.

CEB plans to continue supporting the three adopted schools while exploring opportunities to expand the program to more Last Mile Schools across the country.

Operating in 35 domestic and 26 international destinations spanning across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, CEB continues to connect Filipinos through air travel while helping uplift communities by investing in the next generation.

Statement about Philippines AirAsia

SEPANG, 4 June 2026 - AirAsia X (AirAsia Group*) categorically denies recent media reports claiming that the operations of its airline, Philippines AirAsia (flight code: Z2), are being grounded. These reports are entirely false and do not reflect the reality of the business or operations of the airline.

All Z2 flights remain fully operational, with flights and services continuing as scheduled across its network, subject to normal operational considerations such as weather and other standard factors affecting airline operations.

AirAsia Group views these coordinated and sensationalised reports as part of a deliberate smear campaign that has long been occurring aimed at undermining fair competition in the Philippine aviation sector. Such narratives serve only the interests of those seeking to limit consumer choice and create conditions that could lead to a monopoly in the market. A monopoly benefits no one except dominant market players. For travellers, it often results in reduced competition, fewer choices and significantly higher airfares.

Tony Fernandes, Co-founder and Advisor of AirAsia Group said: “AirAsia has long championed affordable travel and will continue to stand firmly against any development that harms consumers or restricts access to air connectivity. AirAsia carries almost seven million guests in the Philippines annually and our commitment to the Philippines is absolute. We are deeply invested in the country, its people and its future. For over a decade, we have played a key role in democratising air travel, making flying accessible to millions of Filipinos who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to travel by air.

“Looking ahead, we are incredibly invested in the development of new airport infrastructure across the country, including in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), which will unlock greater opportunities for growth, improve connectivity, enhance operational efficiency and enable us to lower costs even further. As we expand our fleet and aircraft orderbook to become the first narrowbody global low-cost network carrier, we intend to deploy more aircraft into our operations in the Philippines. These developments will allow Philippines AirAsia to expand our network, offer even more competitive fares and continue delivering greater value to Filipino travellers.”

Philippines AirAsia remains committed to serving the public, supporting tourism and economic growth, and ensuring that every Filipino continues to have access to safe, affordable and reliable air travel.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport Welcomes VietJet's Planned Direct Cebu–Ho Chi Minh Service Following Vietnamese State Visit to Philippines

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), operated by Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC), welcomed Vietnam’s leading budget carrier VietJet Air with its plans to launch a direct route between Ho Chi Minh City and Cebu, further strengthening air connectivity between two of Southeast Asia's most dynamic tourism and economic hubs.

The announcement ceremony was led by VietJet Air's Vice Chairman Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, together with Aboitiz InfraCapital President and CEO Cosette V. Canilao, during the Vietnam–Philippines Business Forum held on June 1, 2026 at Diamond Hotel Manila. The event formed part of the State Visit of Vietnamese President Tô Lâm, hosted by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two countries in trade, investment, tourism, and connectivity.

"This development reflects the growing demand for travel between Cebu and Vietnam and highlights the strength of the relationship between our two countries. Direct connectivity plays a vital role in stimulating tourism, facilitating commerce, and creating opportunities that benefit our communities and economies,” said Canilao.

With this new direct route, Filipino travelers can now easily access Vietnam and other Asian countries, Vietnamese travelers are now also a flight away to discovering other exciting Philippine destinations via MCIA, the country’s busiest gateway outside Manila.

The planned Cebu–Ho Chi Minh City service marks a significant milestone in enhancing tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and the Philippines. The new route is expected to provide travelers with greater convenience while opening new opportunities for business, investment, and leisure travel across both markets.

The announcement follows the successful operation of a series of VietJet charter flights between Da Nang, Vietnam and Cebu, which targeted the Philippine outbound leisure market and achieved strong passenger demand.

Recognizing the potential of the Vietnamese market, ACAC intensified its route development efforts through a series of strategic engagements with VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines. These initiatives included airline headquarters visits, executive-level discussions, and participation in major international route development forums such as Routes World and Routes Asia. ACAC also shared comprehensive market intelligence, traffic demand analyses, and growth projections directly with airline network planning and commercial teams, demonstrating Cebu's strong potential as a growing international gateway.

The planned launch of direct flights between Cebu and Ho Chi Minh City highlights the success of these collaborative route development initiatives and reinforces MCIA's commitment to expanding international connectivity, supporting tourism growth, and strengthening Cebu's position as a leading gateway to the Philippines. This development further advances MCIA's Ceb Connects program, which aims to make Cebu as the Philippines' premier tourism transfer hub, seamlessly connecting international travelers to destinations across the country's islands.

With Vietnam emerging as one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing travel markets, the new service—expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026—is poised to enhance accessibility between the two destinations while creating new opportunities for travelers, tourism stakeholders, and businesses alike.

Goldilocks Bakeshop taps First Gen for solar power facility

Goldilocks Bakeshop, Inc. (Goldilocks), the country’s biggest chain of bakeries, has tapped the First Gen Group (First Gen), the Philippines’ leading renewable energy company, for the construction and long-term management of an on-site solar power facility to run the bakery chain’s production plant in Cebu.

Goldilocks and First Gen officials announced their partnership on Thursday, 14 May 2026, after they formally inaugurated the 516-kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system that First Gen constructed for the Goldilocks commissary in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu.

The project forms part of Goldilocks’ program to save on electricity and support its sustainability goals through increased use of renewable energy at its production plants.

Terms and conditions for the construction of the solar rooftop facility are embodied in the solar power purchase agreement (SPPA) that both companies finalized in November 2025.

Under the SPPA, First Gen constructed and installed the solar PV system at the Goldilocks commissary and will maintain this for the next 10 years. The Lapu-Lapu facility serves the requirements of Goldilocks’ stores in Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Masbate and Siquijor.

“We are pleased to begin this partnership with First Gen to help us achieve our sustainability goals. So far, we have started to see tangible results from our ability to generate part of our energy requirements from solar energy. Our solar power gives us a level of comfort in terms of power supply stability and security while contributing to environment preservation” said Marilou Plando, Goldilocks head of Manufacturing for Visayas.

Goldilocks was founded in 1966 and has since grown into the Philippines’ largest bakeshop chain with over 1,000 stores around the Philippines. It also has branches in the United States and Canada.

“We are privileged to help empower Goldilocks in generating their own solar power. We look forward to a deeper partnership and collaboration with them as we move forward with our shared vision towards a decarbonized future,” said Mark Malabanan, Head of Solar and Commercial Business of First Gen.

First Gen is the leading RE producer in the Philippines, with 1,700 MW of generating capacity from 31 hydro, geothermal, solar and wind facilities nationwide.

Aside from producing renewable energy, the First Gen group also supports businesses from a diverse range of industries with solutions to rationalize their energy consumption. These solutions include on-site solar PV facilities, remote energy monitoring systems and energy audits.

TAIWANESE INVESTORS SET SIGHTS ON CEBU’S GROWING TOURISM SCENE WITH BOUTIQUE RESORT AND AMBITIOUS EXPANSION PLANS

In a move that highlights Cebu’s emerging appeal to international travelers, a group of Taiwanese investors has launched a small, boutique resort with a focus on guests from Taiwan. The owner say their primary goal was to restore and improve the property, staying true to their original vision. “We wanted to return to the intention behind acquiring the place: fix it up, improve it, and operate it as planned,” shared Raymond Chong, CEO of Zora-S, explaining the motivation for the project.

The team, who brought experience and an established F&B business from Taiwan, specifically identified the growing trend of Taiwanese tourists seeking fresh destinations. “Most Taiwanese travelers are familiar with Manila, Palawan, and Boracay, but only recently have more people become aware of what Cebu has to offer,” Chong noted. This insight, combined with their marketing reach in Taiwan, drove the group to establish a hospitality business in Cebu positioned primarily for Taiwanese visitors.

Launched just a few months ago, the initial resort is described as catering to smaller groups—typically 20 to 30 guests—under the name Zora S. This boutique approach sets it apart from what the team envisions for the future.

Looking ahead, the investors have already identified a new development site in Medellin, northern Cebu, aiming to build a significantly larger, four-star resort with 200 rooms. This planned expansion aims to attract both local and international guests, marking a bold next chapter for the group’s hospitality ambitions.

With awareness of Cebu rising among Taiwanese travelers, the group’s dual-pronged strategy—offering both intimate experiences and large-scale resort luxury—could signal a new era for the region’s tourism landscape.

ZORAH S. RESORT LAUNCHES AS BOUTIQUE PRELUDE TO MAJOR MADALINE DESTINATION

Zorah S., a newly opened boutique resort situated less than 20 kilometers from Cebu City Center, is setting a new standard for corporate events, family gatherings, and upscale staycations.

The boutique property features just 10 rooms, providing an intimate ambiance while offering amenities such as a swimming pool, sauna, lawn, sandbox, and mini cinema. "It’s not a huge resort," explained a Sales & Marketing Executive, Ivy Marie Aguanta, emphasizing the property’s emphasis on exclusivity and personalized experiences.

Unlike the planned Zorah Beach Resort in Madaline—which will feature larger-scale amenities including a beach bar, spa, and water sports—Zorah S. positions itself for the corporate, events, and family market, offering a preview of what’s to come. The resort’s culinary program features curated cuisines led by an in-house international chef, sourcing fresh ingredients directly from the local Cebu market.

Raymond Chong, CEO of Zora-S, said there is still significant potential in Cebu’s tourism market, which, despite current challenges, is expected to grow in the coming years. Zorah S. is not aiming to compete with traditional hospitality giants like Dusit or Sheraton. Instead, it targets the growing demand for specialized venues suitable for corporate retreats, learning events with trainers, and boutique events.

Whole-building bookings are available at competitive market, accommodating up to 30 guests—a premium, city-proximate option lauded for both value and exclusivity.
