White-bellied Woodpecker - Dryocopus javensis

One of the largest woodpeckers in Asia, known for its loud drumming used for communication and territory marking, its powerful beak and long sticky tongue for extracting insects from deep wood, and its role in forests as it creates nesting cavities that are later used by other wildlife.

A lifer for me, and I was amazed hearing its loud drumming in the forest.

Rufous-crowned Bee-eater - Merops americanus

A fast, agile hunter that catches flying insects mid-air with sharp precision before returning to a perch to scan for its next target.

In this shot, an electric wire serves as an elevated, unobstructed lookout over open space where insects pass, making it an effective spot for spotting and launching attacks.

Purple-throated Sunbird (Orange-lined) - Leptocoma sperata

A small, vividly colored sunbird commonly found in the Philippines, especially in lowland forests, gardens, and coastal areas.

They primarily feed on nectar but also eat small insects and spiders, especially during breeding for protein. They play a role similar to bees by transferring pollen between flowers, especially in tropical plants.

White-eared Tailorbird - Orthotomus cinereiceps

A secretive, sharp-looking tailorbird found only in the Philippines, mostly in western Mindanao and Basilan.

You will rarely see it in the open. It prefers thick undergrowth in forests and clearings, staying low and concealed.

Rufous-fronted Tailorbird - Orthotomus frontalis

A tiny, energetic songbird endemic to the Philippines.
Easily identified by its rufous (reddish-brown) forehead and crown, contrasting with olive-green upperparts and pale underparts.

As a member of the tailorbird genus, it likely builds a concealed leaf nest, but unlike the Common Tailorbird, direct documentation of leaf-stitching in this exact species is limited, so this behavior is inferred rather than strongly recorded.

Orange-bellied Flowerpecker - Dicaeum trigonostigma

Feeds heavily on mistletoe berries, small fruits, and nectar. Flowerpeckers are known specialists in mistletoe fruits.

They swallow berries whole and wipe sticky seeds onto branches, which helps mistletoe germinate. This behavior is well documented for flowerpeckers.
