Feastday: 19th of September

On 19 September 1846, in the mountain pastures above the village of La Salette in Isรจre, two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mรฉlanie Calvat, said they had met a โ€˜Beautiful Ladyโ€™ in tears, all in light. She entrusted them with a message of conversion, for โ€˜all her peopleโ€™. After 5 years of rigorous investigation, the bishop of Grenoble, Msgr Philibert de Bruillard, issued a mandate recognising the authenticity of the apparition.

Two children spoke of having met with a โ€˜Beautiful Ladyโ€™ in the countryside where their cows were grazing, above the village of La Salette. Maximin Giraud was 11 and Melanie Calvat was 14.

At first seated and weeping, the โ€˜Beautiful Ladyโ€™ stood up and, in French and in local dialect, she spoke to them for a long time about her Son, drawing examples from their own lives. She gave them a message and told them to ensure that it was
passed on to all of the people.

The light in which she wasbathed and which enfolded all three of them came from a large crucifix which she wore upon her chest, bearing also a hammer and pliers on the cross bar. She was wearing a heavy chain upon her shoulders and, to the side, roses. Her head, her body and her feet were surrounded by roses. Then the โ€˜Beautiful Ladyโ€™ moved up a short steep rise and disappeared into the light.

On the 19th September 1851, after a long and rigorous enquiry, Msgr. Philibert de Bruillard, the Bishop of Grenoble, declared in a celebrated mandate that: โ€œ...the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to two shepherds on the moun- tain of La Saletteโ€ฆhad all of the characteristics of truth and that the faithful had good grounds to believe in it, accepting it as certain beyond doubt.

Saint Joseph of Cupertino is most famous for levitating at prayer. Already as a child, Joseph showed a fondness for prayer. After a short career with the Capuchins, he joined the Conventual Franciscans. Following a brief assignment caring for the friary mule, Joseph began his studies for the priesthood. Though studies were very difficult for him, Joseph gained a great deal of knowledge from prayer. He was ordained in 1628.

Saint Joseph of Cupertinoโ€™s tendency to levitate during prayer was sometimes a cross; some people came to see this much as they might have gone to a circus sideshow. Josephโ€™s gift led him to be humble, patient, and obedient, even though at times he was greatly tempted and felt forsaken by God. He fasted and wore iron chains for much of his life.

The friars transferred Joseph several times for his own good and for the good of the rest of the community. He was reported to and investigated by the Inquisition; the examiners exonerated him.

Saint Joseph of Cupertino was canonized in 1767. In the investigation preceding the canonization, 70 incidents of levitation are recorded. St. Juan Macias is a saint dear to the heart of Dominicans. To the chorus of Dominican saints, this humble lay brother adds his characteristic notes of contemplation and spiritual friendship, a living example of the Dominican motto, โ€œto contemplate and to give to others the fruits of our contemplation.โ€

Juan Macias was born on March 2, 1585 in a small village in southwestern Spain. Raised by their uncle whose last name, โ€œMacias,โ€ Juan and his sister took it as their own. When he was sixteen, Juan met a Dominican priest while attending Mass in a neighboring village. This experience made a new impression on Juan and opened his heart to the possibility of a Dominican vocation. Juan received another special grace: it is said that as he began to seek Godโ€™s will for his life, he was frequently visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary and by his patron, St. John the Evangelist.

At the age of 35, St. John told him that it was not to be in Spain that he would become a Dominican, but in Lima, Peru. In 1622, Juan Macias entered the Dominican convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Lima, Peru. He entered as a lay brother, and was the assistant porter (doorkeeper) until his death in 1646.

Juan Macias exemplified the Dominican charism. Like St. Dominic, he learned the most sublime theology by studying the โ€œbook of charity,โ€ the Cross. Juan Maciasโ€™ entire life preached the Word of God to those he met. At the time of his death, Our Lady, St. Dominic, his patron, St. John, and many other saints, came to accompany him to heaven. They were seen by some of the brothers.

St. Robert Bellarmine was born at Montepulciano in Tuscany on October 4, 1542, the feast of the Poverello of Assisi toward whom he always cherished a special devotion. The day on which he died, September 17, is now the feast in honor of the stigmata of St. Francis.

In 1560 Robert Bellarmine entered the Society of Jesus. He easily ranks among its greatest men, illustrious for learning as well as for piety, humility, and simplicity of heart. If it were possible to summarize his life in a single sentence, one that would resolve all the varied activities and accomplishments of his long career, a verse from the psalm might serve: "If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand be forgotten." His most important work was controversial in nature but the impact of his presentation "resembled the final chord in a mighty cantata, a chord that resounded through all the vice and scandal resulting from the internal corruption of the Church of that day, and that chord heralded Mother Church as one, holy, and Catholic" (E. Birminghaus).

Bellarmine also acted as confessor to the youthful Aloysius and John Berchmans. It might be asked why three hundred years passed before the beatification and canonization of Bellarmine. Long ago Bishop Hefele pointed to the reason when he wrote: "Bellarmine deserves the highest degree of respect from Catholics, even though he has not been canonized. Those who labored to besmirch him have only erected a monument of shame for themselves!" Finally in 1923, he was beatified; canonization followed in 1930, and on September 17, 1931, Pope Pius XI declared him a doctor of the Church. The first Catholic community in Pakil was founded by St. Pedro Bautista in 1588 as part of Paete, becoming independent in 1676. The original image, the painting, according to tradition, belonged to some group of missionaries who crossed Laguna de Bay in a launch. When the launch was shipwrecked, some of its relics were washed ashore including the image of the Virgin. One Friday, 15 September 1788, some fishermen found the image in the nets. Believing it was a miraculous catch, they decided to drop it off at a parish church. When they started to carry the painting, they found that it was heavy. They tried to carry it in many directions until it was near the church of Pakil. While they headed that way, the wind and current aided their course; and when they landed, they left the image on a rock so they could continue their fishing duties.

A group of women found the image one Sunday morning on September 15, 1788. Although it had rained during the night, the canvas was dry. When they tried to take it away, they could not move it; even the strongest among them, Mariangga, could not lift it. They quickly told the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Miguel Soriano, who in turn called the sacristans, choir members, and churchgoers to get the image. As they lifted the image, the people around began to sing and dance. To their surprise, the image gave way that led to the tradition of Turumba that continues to be practiced up to this day.

By order of Pope Pius XII, likewise, and in recognition of the miracles credited to the Virgin, the statue was Episcopally crowned by Bishop Alejandro Olalia, the Bishop of Lipa, on May 24, 1953.

In 2021, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments acceded to the request of the faithful and devotees of the Virgin to grant the image the honor of Pontifical Coronation. The news of the grant of the petition for the Coronation was celebrated by her devotees nationwide. After two years of long preparation, the much-anticipated coronation rites took place on September 15, 2023, where the original painting was crowned on a special throne frame specifically made for the occasion.
