On February 16, 2026, college students, together with Lumad Youth for Climate Justice, participated in the Awareness Campaign on Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) led by Assisi Development Foundation, Inc. at Assumption College of Davao. The campaign highlighted the urgent need to protect the Panigan–Tamugan River—one of the primary water sources of Davao City.

While initiatives like PES promote community awareness and participation, the responsibility to protect this vital watershed must not fall on communities alone. We call on our local government units and concerned national agencies to take decisive, transparent, and sustained action in safeguarding the Panigan–Tamugan River. Environmental protection should not be reduced to campaigns—it must be backed by strong policies, strict enforcement, and genuine accountability.

Protecting the Panigan–Tamugan River means protecting our future—our water, our health, and our communities. The call is clear: awareness must lead to action, and action must lead to accountability.

PRESS RELEASE

Lumad Youth for Climate Justice Condemn US-Iran Aggression, Call for Climate Accountability
April 2026

The Lumad youth stand in strong condemnation of the continuing aggression and militarized conflict between the United States and Iran—an escalating war that not only threatens human lives but accelerates the global climate crisis.
Recent reports show that the ongoing conflict has already caused massive destruction to critical infrastructure, disrupted global energy systems, and intensified fossil fuel dependence. The war has destabilized oil supply chains and petrochemical industries—further locking the world into destructive extractive systems that drive climate change.

Beyond human casualties, war is also a climate disaster. In just the first two weeks of fighting, the conflict generated an estimated 5 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, worsening the already fragile global carbon budget.

This exposes a painful truth: war is incompatible with climate justice.

War as Climate Violence
Bombings of oil facilities, destruction of water systems, and toxic pollution from military operations have long-term ecological impacts. Environmental damage—from air contamination to water insecurity—is often ignored, yet it disproportionately affects marginalized and indigenous communities worldwide.

For Lumad communities in the Philippines, this reality is deeply familiar. Militarization, resource extraction, and environmental destruction have long gone hand in hand. What is happening in Iran reflects the same system that displaces indigenous peoples, exploits ancestral lands, and sacrifices ecosystems for geopolitical power.

Holding Governments Accountable
We call out the governments involved—especially global superpowers—for perpetuating cycles of war that endanger both people and the planet.

At a time when the world should be urgently transitioning away from fossil fuels, this conflict has instead intensified dependence on oil and gas, exposing the vulnerability of global energy systems.

War is not only a failure of diplomacy—it is a failure of climate responsibility.

We demand:
•Immediate ceasefire and de-escalation of hostilities
• Accountability for environmental destruction caused by military actions
•Redirection of military spending toward climate adaptation and mitigation

Protection of indigenous peoples and frontline communities affected by both war and climate change.

Climate Justice is Peace
As Lumad youth, we assert that climate justice cannot exist without peace, and peace cannot exist without justice.

The billions spent on war should instead fund renewable energy, climate resilience, and community-led solutions. Continued militarization only deepens inequality, displaces vulnerable populations, and accelerates ecological collapse.

We stand in solidarity with all affected communities and call on the international community to act—not only to end the war—but to dismantle the systems that make such destruction possible.

No to war. No to imperialist aggression.
Yes to climate justice. Yes to indigenous rights

Today is the International Day of Forests.

Investing in forest conservation, restoration and sustainable use pays off. Forest loss is expensive triggering soil erosion, flooding, climate impacts and productivity declines that far outweigh any short‑term gains and the damage doesn’t stop at the treeline.

Healthy forests protect the wetlands downstream that store carbon, buffer floods, filter water and sustain biodiversity. When we safeguard forests, we safeguard wetlands and together they form one of the planet’s most powerful natural defences.

Transparency matters. 🔎

Clear and credible biodiversity action starts with understanding how business activities interact with nature.

The IPBES Assessment highlights why transparency and evidence are essential to avoid greenwashing.

True, money does not grow on trees, but in reality, healthy forests are indeed bankable for a secure future. 📈💰💳

Over two million square kilometres of forests in the ASEAN region supply various raw materials for different industries. And while providing for our economic needs, forests still protect us from diseases, shelter various wildlife species, and more!

As we celebrate this year’s , let us unite our greening efforts for a more transformative result. Ecosystem restoration is an impossible task for one, but an entire forest teeming with wildlife is within our reach if we consistently work together for this goal.

🌍 What does cutting greenhouse gas emissions at scale look like?

Since 2015, we’ve helped reduce 527 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions through GGGI-supported initiatives. And that’s the equivalent of taking 115 million cars off the road for an entire year.

Behind this number are practical solutions. From clean energy and green infrastructure to policy reform, helping countries accelerate the transition to low-carbon development.

26/02/2026

We, the Lumad Youth for Climate Justice, express our serious concern over the continued construction of the Davao–Samal Bridge despite unresolved environmental and social issues surrounding the project.

We are not against development. However, we firmly believe that development must be sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible. Proceeding with a massive infrastructure project without fully addressing its impacts on marine ecosystems, coastal livelihoods, and indigenous communities reflects a development model that prioritizes speed over people and profit over the planet.

The bridge threatens critical marine biodiversity, including coral reefs and fishing grounds that sustain thousands of families. It also raises questions on the adequacy of environmental compliance, transparency in decision-making, and meaningful public consultation.

We call on the Department of Public Works and Highways, environmental agencies, and local government units to halt construction until comprehensive, independent environmental assessments are conducted and affected communities- especially the fisherfolk should genuinely consulted.

Real progress is not measured by kilometers of concrete, but by how well development protects life, culture, and future generations. We stand for development that heals, not harms.
No to destructive development. Yes to climate justice and sustainable futures.
