The main purpose of the trip was Wiki Takes Davao, a photo scavenger hunt and free-content photography outreach organized to document places, culture, people, and heritage for open knowledge. While in Davao, I also took the opportunity to capture the Kadayawan Festival, which I was covering again after seven years.

As a pleasant side trip, I was fortunate to be selected as one of the participants in a birding sortie organized by Sony Philippines and CameraHaus Davao at Malagos Garden Resort.

The Southern Silvery Kingfisher was one of the birds we were hoping to see. It made its presence felt through its calls but unfortunately never gave us a chance for a photograph. Still, the sortie gave me several lifers, including the Yellow-wattled Bulbul, Orange-bellied Flowerpecker, White-breasted Munia, and Guaiabero.

We also made a quick visit to Samal Island Nature Sanctuary, hoping to catch a glimpse of its star bird, the Writhed Hornbill. It remained elusive, but the Dollarbird and Coppersmith Barbet became new additions to my list.

Wiki Takes Davao may have been the main mission, with Kadayawan and birding as side trips, but each brought its own stories and discoveries. From documenting culture and heritage to photographing wildlife, it all comes back to the same goal: creating and sharing images that help make places, people, and nature more visible and appreciated.

Last weekend, we headed to Mt. Manunggal hoping to finally get a photograph of the Philippine Hanging Parrot. Luck wasn't on our side, and we didn't manage to capture one, but it was far from a wasted weekend. The cool mountain breeze and peaceful surroundings made the trip worthwhile on their own.

This weekend, we revisited a familiar spot, the so-called Lovers Lane in Cabancalan, Mandaue. The pond was flooded, so our chances of seeing the usual waterbirds were off the table. The familiar grassbirds were still around, though, and as we explored the area, we stumbled upon something new for our list.

A ๐‹๐จ๐ง๐ -๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐’๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ค๐ž (๐ฟ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘ ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž) made an appearance, giving us a new addition to our growing list. We also spotted a few other species that we had photographed before but were new sightings for the area, including the Philippine Coucal, Pied Triller, and White-eared Brown Dove.

Despite the gloomy weather and a flooded pond, the area still managed to surprise us. Sometimes, you don't need to go far to find something new.

Not every birding trip goes as planned, and that's part of the adventure.

This weekend, the usual birds we had hoped to see never made an appearance. The resident Mangrove Blue Flycatcher was nowhere to be found, and both the Elegant Tit and Coppersmith Barbet kept themselves well hidden.

The biggest surprise came when a Philippine Hanging Parrot swiftly flew across our spot. It was too quick for a photograph, but the brief encounter was enough to confirm that the species finds refuge within the forests of Lakeview Le Jardin.

Although we didn't get the sightings we were hoping for, the ever-reliable Garden Sunbirds kept us company and brightened the morning with their constant activity.

Some days, the camera comes home with fewer photos. But every visit teaches us something new, and every unexpected encounter is another reason to return.

A week had passed, and we found ourselves back at the beautiful gardens of Lakeview Le Jardin. This time, we were hoping for a glimpse of the Kulasisi and perhaps another chance to photograph the Coppersmith Barbet.

The Kulasisi remained elusive, but the morning still had plenty to offer.

A juvenile Coppersmith Barbet finally gave us the opportunity we had been waiting for, making a brief appearance right in front of us. It stayed just long enough for a few decent shots before disappearing back into the trees. A pair of Magnificent Sunbirds also brightened the morning, while the resident Mangrove Blue Flycatcher once again made its expected appearance.

The biggest surprise, however, was a small flock of ๐„๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ญ๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐–๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐ž-๐ž๐ฒ๐ž. They seemed to follow us along the trail, calling from tree to tree and eventually becoming the lifer of the day.

No Kulasisi yet, but another memorable morning in Tabunan. It seems every return to Lakeview Le Jardin rewards us with a different story.

Always hoping to add a new species to my list, we found ourselves back in Tabunan, exploring the beautiful gardens of Lakeview Le Jardin.

We were hoping to find the Kulasisi It never showed up, but as birders know, the forest often has other plans.

Instead, an ๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐“๐ข๐ญ (๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด) became the highlight of the morning and the ๐’๐’Š๐’‡๐’†๐’“ of the trip. It serenaded us with its melodic calls and gave us a few wonderful opportunities for photographs. No Kulasisi this time, but I left with no regrets. Every visit to Tabunan brings something unexpected, and those surprises often become the most memorable part of the trip.

And, of course, this is aside from the waders that are always prominent in the area and make Jugan such a rewarding birding destination.

For a short trip, Jugan once again reminded me that even a small patch of mangroves can hold an incredible diversity of birdlife. Sometimes, all it takes is slowing down and looking a little closer.

I spent a couple of hours patiently waiting beneath the mangroves, eyes fixed on the canopy, hoping for a clear perch. The tiny songbird remained elusive for most of the morning, moving quietly among the leaves and branches.

Then, for a brief moment, it finally graced me with its presence. It perched just long enough for a few decent shots before disappearing once again into the mangrove foliage.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little patience, a quiet morning alone, and a few fleeting seconds to make an entire birding trip worthwhile.
