Apr 14, 2025: The midday sun casts sharp shadows across the massive stone relief mural, bringing the town's transformation from a nine-family outpost to a gold-mining hub to life. Located near the old gateway, this mural marks the entrance to what was once the most prosperous and densely populated mountain town in Asia. Zooming out you see Jiufen’s shrines that are oriented toward the coast, honoring the local belief that mountain spirits must guard both the gold mines and the mariners.

The surrounding "honeycomb rocks" makes me feel like I’ve stepped directly onto the surface of Mars. These unique, pitted textures are the result of thousands of years of seawater salt crystallizing and expanding within the pores of the sandstone.
