But being a hero isn't always about grand acts of bravery. Heroes can be found in our homes, communities, schools, workplaces, and even in the quiet acts of kindness we do for others. Every Filipino who chooses to serve, care, stand up for what is right, and help build a better nation carries the spirit of heroism.

May we remember the sacrifices of our national heroes—not only today, but every day—and continue the work they started by being responsible, compassionate, and courageous Filipinos.

Today, we celebrate more than just a fiesta. We celebrate the faith, history, culture, resilience, and friendship that have shaped Cagayan de Oro into the vibrant city we proudly call home. 💛

For generations, August 28 has been a special day for Kagay-anons as we honor St. Augustine of Hippo, the patron saint of Cagayan de Oro. The Recollects officially declared San Agustin as the patron saint of Cagayan on August 28, 1780, giving this date a deep place in the religious and cultural history of the city.

From its humble beginnings as a riverside settlement to the bustling and progressive City of Golden Friendship, Cagayan de Oro has continuously evolved. And much like the fiesta itself, our city has grown by bringing people together—through faith, community, culture, commerce, and the simple Kagay-anon tradition of welcoming others as higala (friends).

The celebration eventually grew beyond the religious feast into what we now know as the Higalaay Festival—a month-long showcase of our heritage, local talents, food, businesses, traditions, and the warm hospitality that makes CDO unique.

Perhaps that is why the fiesta remains so meaningful: it reminds us where we came from while celebrating where we are going.

The Cagayan River, the old cathedral, Gaston Park, our colorful streets, our diverse communities, our hardworking people, and our unmistakable “Kagay-anon” spirit all tell pieces of the same story—a story of a city that continues to grow without forgetting its roots.

And today, August 28 is officially recognized as Cagayan de Oro City Day, a special non-working holiday established by Republic Act No. 9644 in honor of the feast of St. Augustine.

So wherever you are today, let us celebrate with gratitude and pride. ❤️

May we continue to preserve our heritage, honor our history, welcome our visitors, support our local communities, and keep alive the spirit of friendship that has always defined Cagayan de Oro.
