K239.8 Million Contract Signed to Upgrade Goroka City Roads
The National Government has taken another major step in improving road infrastructure under the Connect PNG Programme with the signing of a K239.8 million contract to upgrade key roads in Goroka City, Eastern Highlands Province.
His Excellency Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae executed the contract on behalf of the State at Government House on Thursday.
The project involves the design, construction and upgrading of the Highlands Highway section through Goroka City, stretching from Mt Zion to Goroka Market.
The existing two-lane sealed road will be expanded into a four-lane asphaltic concrete pavement road with an ANNS stabilised base course.
The contract is valued at K239,799,295.27, inclusive of GST and contingency, and will be fully funded by the National Government through the Connect PNG Programme.
The project is expected to be completed within 36 months.
The contract was awarded following approval by the National Executive Council to China Wu Yi Co. Ltd..
Company representatives Ding Hongliang and Zhu Zhongshan signed the agreement before the Governor-General. The signing was witnessed by Department of Works and Highways Secretary Gibson Holemba.
The Goroka road upgrade is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and support economic growth in Eastern Highlands Province by providing a modern transport corridor through the provincial capital.
