OOPHAGA LEHMANNI
The nominal (red) morph of Oophaga lehmanni is one of Colombia’s most iconic but also geographically restricted dendrobatid species.
This species is endemic to the western slopes of the Colombian Andes in the Valle del Cauca region. Adults are characterized by striking red, orange or yellow bands separated by black, with considerable variation in coloration among populations. And one of my favorite and also key characteristics of the species - their white toes!
This species of poison frog has an extremely restricted distribution and faces significant threats from habitat loss and illegal collection for the international amphibian trade. Getting to observing this species in its natural habitat is a particularly special experience and highlights the importance of protecting the remaining habitat where it still exists!
Thanks to In situ herpetos. for organizing this experience 🙌🏻
