Day 563: Gloxinia sylvatica ❤️ (Seemannia sylvatica)
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡️
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Seemannia sylvatica, formerly known as Gloxinia sylvatica, is a wonderful house plant to have. A rapid grower, it quickly fills up a pot and flowers heavily and constantly. This plant belongs to the gesneriad family and originates from South America. It produces rhizomes and if worst comes to worst, your plant gets exposed to the cold or gets dried out, you can bring it back to life, as long as there is a fragment of a healthy rhizome in the soil. This plant grows offshoots and fills up the pot completely in a very short period of time, so I wouldn’t recommend it for mixed containers or arrangements.

Day 562: Lantana ❤️ (Lantana camara)
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡️
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Lantana camara, commonly called lantana or shrub verbena, is native to Central and South America. It is an upright frost-tender shrub that grows 3-6’ tall. It has escaped gardens throughout the world and is considered to be a noxious w**d in many frost-free/tropical areas where it can rapidly spread to form dense thickets. Tiny 5-lobed flowers in dense hemispherical clusters (to 2” diameter) bloom summer to fall. Flower colors include white, yellow, orange, red and purple, often mixed in the same cluster. Ovate, toothed, dark green leaves (to 4” long) are rough-wrinkled above. Leaves are aromatic when bruised. Many cultivars and hybrids are available, including dwarf and trailing plants, to the point where the straight species is seldom found in commerce. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.

Genus name comes from the Latin name for Viburnum transferred to this genus.

Specific epithet is a South American vernacular name for a species of Lantana.

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Zinnia elegans, known as common zinnia, is an old garden favorite with may cultivars available. They are bushy, leafy annuals that typically grow 1-3’ (less frequently to 4’) tall on upright, hairy, branching stems. They feature continuous summer to fall bloom in cool summer climates, but may slow down some at the peak of summer, particularly if attacked by fungal diseases. Many flower forms (single, semi-double and double) and colors (shades of red, yellow, orange, pink, rose, lavender, green and white) are available. Sizes range from small-flowered dwarfs (to 6” tall) to large-flowered giants (to 4’ tall). Ovate to lance-shaped, opposite leaves (to 5” long) clasp the stems. Excellent fresh cut flower.

Genus name honors Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727-1759), professor of botany, Gottingen.

Specific epithet means elegant.

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Clematis is a genus of over 250 species, most of which are woody to semi-woody deciduous vines climbing by twining leaf stalks or in some cases trailing over support, but in a few cases grow as freestanding or sprawling herbaceous perennials and small deciduous or evergreen shrubs. Most have flat, cupped or bell-shaped flowers. Some plants feature ornamental fluffy seed heads in autumn. Plants bear opposite, simple to compound leaves which are usually deciduous but sometimes evergreen. Compound leaves range from lobed to trifoliate to biternate to pinnate to bipinnate. Clematis are native to both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres including Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australasia, North America and Central America.

Genus name comes from the Greek word klematis which is an old name applied to climbing plants.

Day 557: California poppy 🧡 (Eschscholzia californica)
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡️
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Eschscholzia californica, commonly called California poppy, is the state flower of California. It is native to hillsides, roads and open areas from southern Washington south through California, Nevada and New Mexico to northern Mexico. Plants grow in loose, free-branching mounds to 12-15” tall and as wide, with finely divided, fern-like, blue-green leaves. Single, cup-shaped, 4-petaled, silky flowers (3” diameter) are typically bright orange or less frequently yellow-orange. Flowers bloom on long stems from late spring to early summer. Flowers close up in rainy or cloudy weather and at night. Flowers give way to dehiscent seed capsules which split open when ripe to release seeds. Plant foliage turns straw-brown after flowering. Cultivars are available in semi-double to double forms in additional colors including white, pink, red, lilac and purple.

Genus name honors Johann Friedrich Eschscholtz (1793-1831) of Tartu (Dorpat), Estonia, who accompanied Otto von Kotzebue on his first expedition around the world (1815-1818).

Specific epithet means of California.

Day 556: Celosia 💜 (Plumosa group)
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡️
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Plumosa Group plants, commonly called feather celosia, plumed celosia or feathered amaranth, feature narrow-pyramidal, plume-like flower heads (4-10” long) composed of tiny, densely-packed, vividly-colored flowers. Flower colors include bright shades of orange, red, purple, yellow and cream. Flowers bloom throughout summer into fall (sometimes to frost) on erect stems clad with spear-shaped green to red-purple leaves. The flower heads sometimes project an artificial, almost plastic-like appearance that, to some gardeners, may border on the gaudy.

Genus name comes from the Greek word keleos meaning burning for the colorful flowers.

The specific epithet argentea means "silvery", in reference to the shiny, white bracts and tepals of the species. The group name Plumosa means "feathery" in reference to the shape of the inflorescence.

Day 548: Marguerite Daisy (Argyranthemum frutescens)💕
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡ ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Marguerite daisy is a popular plant which can be seen in garden in winters and spring. This evergreen perennial subshrub is native to the Canary Islands, where it survives in sunny rough-sloped terrain and oceanside plant communities. In temperate zones, where the winters are too cold for survival, Marguerite daisy is grown as a summer bedding annual. Marguerite daisy is erect, shrubby and clump-forming. The bright green, deeply lobed leaves are fern-like and emit a strong fragrance when crushed. Its daisies are produced above the foliage, and appear in spring, and can bloom almost all year-round in frost-free climates.
There are many cultivars with colored blooms, including shades of pink, pale yellow and apricot. Flowering subsides in very hot weather and deadheading will prolong vigorous bloom.

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Spergularia is a genus of flowering plants with about 200 described species of which only a fifth are accepted, it belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is also considered as a mere subgenus or section of Arenaria.

It is a deciduous or perennial herbaceous plant with an erect or prostrate and branched stem, reaching a height of 25 cm. The leaves are narrow, opposite, linear, sessile. Inflorescences in terminal cymes with five-petaled white to pink flowers. The fruit is an ovoid to subglobose capsule, dehiscent by 3 valves and with pyriform to suborbicular seeds, compressed and often winged or heteromorphic (winged and wingless mixed). The characters of these seeds are essential for the correct identification of the species.

Day 545: Fuchsias 💜
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
➡️

Hybrid fuchsias are frost-tender, shade-loving shrubby plants that are most commonly sold as container plants (either shrub or trained as standard) or in a hanging basket. They produces drooping, tubular flowers with prominent stamens from spring to frost. Flowering may decline and foliage may wilt in the heat of the summer. Literally thousands of hybrid cultivars are available in commerce. They come with single or double flowers and with a great variety of flower colors, mostly bicolors featuring combinations of red, violet, purple, pink and white. Oval, dentate, medium green leaves (2-5” long). Plant habit varies from that of 1-2’ tall shrub to standards to weeping types with trailing stems. Upright varieties are best for containers. Weeping types are best for hanging baskets. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers.

Genus name honors Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1566), German physician and herbalist, professor at Tubingen, who published in 1542 and 1543 a herbal with unusually beautiful woodcuts of plants.
