Powerful Woodpecker

These large woodpeckers are often found in pairs in a variety of habitat types including mature montane forest, wet forest and cloudforest. Found at higher elevations than any similar large woodpeckers – typically above 1,800m and all the way up to over 3,000m. Look for the white stripe that runs down the face and neck, a white ‘V’ on the back, and the cinnamon belly with dark barring. The male has a red crest. Pairs wander widely throughout the forest, so they are infrequently encountered.eBird. Birdsoftheworld.

📍Central route, Perú 🇵🇪 - IUCN: Vulnerable
Tiny, crested gray flycatcher of high-elevation scrub. Shows black wings and tail, bold white wingbars, and white outer tail feathers. The only small, gray flycatcher with white wingbars in its range. Found locally in Polylepis groves and scrub along steep grassy or rocky mountain slopes. Forages singly or in pairs, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks. Ebird.

Andean Parakeet
(Bolborhynchus orbygnesius)

📍Junin, Perú 🇵🇪
Ranging along the Andes from northern Peru to central Bolivia, the Andean Parakeet is uncommon to locally common from 3,000-4,000 m in semi-arid cloud forests, especially with Polylepis, or in brushy montane ravines. It forages in small groups or pairs in bamboo thickets or leguminaceous trees, and occasionally on the ground, and nests in deep burrows in steep embankments. Its flight is level and direct, without undulation. While it is superficially similar to the Mountain Parakeet, the Andean Parakeet is considerably stockier and shorter-tailed, with less color in the face and wings. The two species are rarely found in the same areas as Andean prefers more humid forests than Mountain. Birdsoftheworld.
