Exquisite print of the "Red eft" aka Eastern Spotted Newt
( Notophthalmus viridescens)
Their dry bumpy skin differs from other salamanders. The color warns of toxicity to potential predators.
The efts overwinter under logs and rocks in the forest for 2-3 years. The next stage they return to the water to transform into adults. As adults they develop characteristics perfect for aquatic life such as a laterally compressed tail for swimming.
Cool fact list-
Eft skin contains a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin
Efts may live 12-15 years
Other salamander take advantage of the colors and toxicity associated with it and mimic the coloration of the eft ( mullerian mimicry)
These newts are otherwise non specialist when it comes to feeding, consuming a variety of invertebrates.

Attack of the zombie fungus. This unfortunate spider fell victim to the corydyceps parasitic fungus.
Once an infection is established, the fungus spreads through the tissue of the organism. The entire process can take a few days. Eventually the victim is manipulated and forced to a high vantage point where contagious fungal spores have a better chance of infecting another organism.

The spike on the right side is the "fruiting" body or "ascocarp" of the fungus.

There are over 600 species of known cordyceps fungus, most of them found in the tropics.

The Maguari Stork , a rare vagrant visitor to the Iquitos area of Peru. In August of last year, I had the pleasure of photographing this group as they combed through the rice fields planted on exposed sand bars of the Amazon River.
