FOUR SPECIES. ONE FRAME. A LIFETIME IN THE MAKING.
🕰️ Almost 40 years ago, I first witnessed this extraordinary scene through the lens of the legendary Peruvian photographer Heinz Plenge. Ever since, capturing it myself had been a dream.
🌎 Our journey led us from Manu Road to the Amazonian lowlands of Las Piedras, and finally to the dry forests of Chaparrí.
🕰️ After a 4 a.m. start and hours concealed in our hide, patience finally paid off at sunrise.
🪶 Four magnificent species. One unforgettable frame. The majestic Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), the regal King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) and the Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus), sharing a single scene in a breathtaking display of wings, colour and hierarchy.
💚 A dream nearly four decades in the making. Finally, through my own lens.

GHOSTS OF THE FOREST!!!
🪶 Hidden in plain sight, two ghostly silhouettes emerged from the branches of the forest. Along Peru’s legendary Manu Road, we came face-to-face with two masters of camouflage: the Great Potoo and Common Potoo.

🌳 Perfectly still, their cryptic plumage made them almost indistinguishable from the bark. By night, these elusive birds take flight to catch insects on the wing.

📷 Having both species right in front of our cameras was pure magic—a rare and unforgettable privilege for any wildlife photographer!

A SPECIAL ENCOUNTER | BRAZILIAN TEAL, MANU, PERU 🇵🇪
🌎 From the Brazilian Pantanal to Peru’s Lower Madre de Dios River, the Brazilian Teal (Amazonetta brasiliensis) has crossed my lens before. Today, another memorable encounter at Cocha Tom, Villa Carmen Manu Biological Station, brought us face-to-face once again with this beautiful duck during our EpicTerra Expeditions birding and photography adventure along the legendary Manu Road.

THE IRIDESCENT AMAZON PARADISE
🌳 Deep in Peru’s Amazon, overlooking Lago Soledad, Tambopata, a hidden spectacle unfolded high above the forest floor. Paradise Tanagers (Tangara chilensis) and Green-and-gold Tanagers (Tangara schrankii) gathered to bathe among the giant leaves of a towering bromeliad.
💙 Electric blues, emerald greens, fiery reds, and golden flashes brought this rainforest sanctuary to life. Some moments transcend photography. You simply pause, breathe, and marvel at nature’s magic.

THE ANCIENT GUARDIANS 🌳🦜 | LAS PIEDRAS, PERÚ
📷 Our adventure took us deep into the little-explored Las Piedras River in Peru, where over a hundred Red-and-green Macaws gathered at a clay lick, feeding on mineral-rich clay that supplements their diet. A breathtaking spectacle of color, sound, and wild behavior unfolding before our eyes and cameras!
🌳 But the wilderness had another secret waiting for us. Walking through the forest with our local guide Daniel, we encountered a colossal, centuries-old Shihuahuaco, sheltering a nesting pair of macaws inside its ancient trunk. A living witness to centuries of Amazonian life.
🌳 These forest elders store carbon and sustain entire ecosystems, providing nesting cavities for macaws and potential nesting sites for majestic Harpy Eagles, which depend on large emergent trees.
⚠️ Yet, commercial logging threatens these giants. Trees that take centuries to grow are felled for their valuable timber, often used for wooden flooring. When one falls, an irreplaceable world of life can disappear with it.
🌳 Some giants belong in the forest, not beneath our feet.

MYSTERIOUS UMBRELLABIRD 🌿
🚙 As we continued our descent along the winding Manu Road, every curve and every stop brought a new surprise. Suddenly, one of the most sought-after and elusive birds crossed our path: the Amazonian Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus), with its distinctive forward-curving crest.

💚 I had only seen this remarkable bird once before, briefly in flight, with no chance to observe it closely or photograph it. Juan Diego, behind the wheel, spotted where it had disappeared into the forest. And there it was, camouflaged in the shadows, apparently hunting for an insect.

🍀 A rare encounter, a little patience, and another unforgettable moment in the wild! Manu Road, Peru, never fails to surprise photographers and birdwatchers. 📸🌳

ENDEMIC ANTPITTA 🐦🌿
🌳 The Manu Road, Peru, never fails to surprise our bird-photography and birdwatching guests! During an early-morning walk along Wayqecha’s cloud forest trails, we were delighted to encounter the charming, round-bodied Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), an endemic species of Peru.
🌳 These elusive ground-dwellers forage among fallen leaves, searching for insects, larvae, and other small invertebrates. A wonderful wildlife encounter and another unforgettable moment shared in the heart of Peru’s cloud forest! 🌿📸

🍊 And the fascination continues at the lek, where the Andean Cock-of-the-rocks gather deep in the cloud forest for one of nature’s most spectacular courtship displays.
It’s a dazzling competition of skill, strength, movement, and intense color — each male striving to prove he is the most impressive performer and capture the attention of a potential mate.
🇵🇪 The unmistakable National Bird of Peru, displaying its extraordinary colors and energy, deep in the cloud forests along our Manu Road adventure in the Peruvian Amazon.

THE KING’S CLAIM!!! 🦅
🍀 An early start. Patience. Silence. And then… the wild takes center stage.
☀️ Rising before dawn on the Manu Road, deep in Peru’s Amazon rainforest, rewarded our Photo Safari guests with an extraordinary encounter: a King Vulture confronting Black Vultures over the remains of a carcass.
🌳 For a few unforgettable moments, the forest became a theatre of survival — raw, powerful and completely unscripted.
📸 Our early-morning patience was rewarded with spectacular images… and very happy guests.
