Farmers call for a protest in defense of the Rio Indio in Panama
PANAMA CITY, PANAMA - APRIL 25, 2026: Farmers on Saturday (April 25) staged a protest as they are threatened by the Rio Indio reservoir as part of International Earth Day in Panama, Panama City.Families from the communities that would be flooded if the project promoted by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) goes ahead participated in the event.Communities represented by the Peasants’ Coordination Committee for Life Against Dams, along with the Diocese of Colon and Guna Yala led by Monsignor Manuel Ochogavia, have raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the reservoir project. They also reject portraying the Rio Indio project as the sole answer to Panama’s water crisis, urging broader, equitable solutions that do not harm rural communities.

Panama Ports Company launches arbitration against Maersk over terminal transfer

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA - MARCH 29: The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and the destroyer USS Gridley arrive with stops including Peru, Chile, and Brazil as part of the Southern Seas 2026 tour in Panama City, Panama, on March 29, 2026. The ships will remain from March 29 to April 2, with Nimitz anchored offshore and Gridley docked at Amador Cruise Port. The voyage began on March 12 from the U.S. East Coast and will continue through the Strait of Magellan before reaching a new homeport on June 20. USS Nimitz, one of the world’s largest warships, is about 333 meters long, carries up to 90 aircraft, and has a displacement of around 100,000 tons.

Panamá City 30-01-2026 The Supreme Court of Panama annulled key port contracts held by a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison, ruling that the contracts were unconstitutional.

China announces withdrawal of concession to company operating in the Panama Canal
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun spoke about the Panamanian court's ruling overturning the concession to a Chinese company operating in the Canal.

“The company reserves all rights, including the right to take legal action. China will take all necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” he said.

President Jose Raul Molino: It is important to note that, until the ruling is enforced, there will be a period of continuity for the current operator, with no operational changes.

Then a transition period will begin until a new concession is finalized, under terms and conditions favorable to our country.
Among all the negotiations, we highlight the one carried out with APM Terminals Panama, a subsidiary of the AP Moller-Maersk group, which has shown willingness to temporarily take over the operation of both terminals and has the necessary capacity and experience.
