Soul DeLight Photo

Soul DeLight Photo Sarah is a New Zealand based photographer specialising in landscape and creative photography.

Sarah became inspired by nature and the landscape as she hiked, camped and travelled around New Zealand and other parts of planet Earth. Originally, she picked up a camera to record these adventures and the landscapes and this soon developed into wanting to capture more than just a ‘snapshot’. Honing her photography skills and craft in landscape photography she has most recently begun to explore a

more creative avenue. Using long exposures, she captures motion, colour, light, tone, shapes and forms that she sees to create images in the landscape. Sarah studied art at high school and then art history at university and is influenced by many great artists and photographers. Some of her favourites are Monet, Turner, Van Gogh and Kandinsky, Ansel Adams and Michael Kenna. Based in West Melton, Canterbury, New Zealand, she loves to explore and photograph both familiar and unfamiliar environments at different times of the day and year.

“Imitation is part of the creative process, but I would argue it is not where you should stop … imitation is where you should begin.”

You can find out more about why I think this in the blog post, “Creativity – you never know what you are going to get” that I sent out in my last newsletter. https://www.souldelightphoto.co.nz/blog/creativity-you-never-know-what-you-are-going-to-get

“I have always liked the visual effects of long exposures; the simplicity and removal of visual distractions is really appealing to me. I wanted to increase my understanding of this to improve the images I was getting but was really confused by the mathematical calculations involved.”

You can find out more about how I tackled this and applied it to my own photography in the blog post, “Simplicity through Long Exposure – Top Tips” that I sent out in my last newsletter. https://www.souldelightphoto.co.nz/blog/long-exposure-tips

I enjoy a good triptych, so love the opportunity to submit images to the annual Nelson Camera Club Triptych Salon. When I received the results of this years salon, I was excited to see that three of my images had been accepted, but was even more excited to see that my "Burning" image took out the champion image. After seeing the other entries I am humbled. There is so much talent and imagination in all of the images that are submitted in this salon.

If you want to see the other images I submitted head to my website (https://www.souldelightphoto.co.nz/blog/champion-image-2023), there is also a link to the website where you can see the other amazing images that were entered this year.

In August the 2023 NZIPP Iris Awards were held in Christchurch. As always it was great being able to listen to the judges and hear their thoughts on the amazing images that were entered and be inspired by the talented folks that entered. This year I received 9 awards; 4 bronze, 4 silver and 1 silver distinction. Which I was pretty thrilled about. Here they are. These are pretty small so if you wanted to see larger ones check them out on my website https://www.souldelightphoto.co.nz/portfolio/awardwinners or at the link in my bio.

It was great to be part of an exhibition that was all about photography. It was an honour and a delight to learn that one of my images "Rain and Light" had one won Best in Show.

The image is pretty small on here you can check it out a bigger version and see the other images on my website blog (https://www.souldelightphoto.co.nz/blog) or at the link in my bio.

Here's another one from the session last week trawling through photos for the . Another beach scene. Again, a long exposure shot. I've always loved the way the tide rushed in when I took this image. It was the biggest wave during the shoot and despite waiting patiently it never happened again while I was there. Still, at least I got this one shot.

If you've been following me on here for a while you know that I am rather erratic with posting content. I have little flurries and then life gets in the way and posting becomes a lesser priority. You'll also have noticed that I have mentioned a newsletter in some of my recent posts. I have a constant struggle with social media for many reasons, not least of all the pressure it adds to life. So, the idea behind the newsletter is to create a more authentic engagement with you all where I will have the time to think about the content that I share with you and that it will be more meaningful for both you and I. I don't plan to stop social media content but the authentic connection will be through the newsletter. So here's the plug again! 😉 The newsletter will include personal thoughts and insights on life, photography and the creative journey. I'll also share some photographic tips and tricks I have learnt along the way. The first one is being sent out in July. Are you in? ... Yes! ... I knew you would be. 😉 You can sign up on my website www.souldelightphoto.co.nz or follow the links in my bio. It will be great to have you along for the ride.

I've spent some time today trawling through photos in anticipation of the and have found a few older images that I have re-edited not necessarily for the awards but because I got distracted and thought I could make some of them better. This is one of those from my time up in . It has also made me remember why I loved playing around with long exposures so much and the effects you can get with water. Fun!
