Lake Ellesmere in the final stages being opened to the sea yesterday. The lake is the biggest in Canterbury averaging a depth of only 1 meter. The lake has no natural outlet and has to be opened with heavy machinery to the sea 1-2 times a year.

I am very proud to be the Winner of the Tohu Whenua award. Thanks to all for the support and encouragement from everyone.

Congratulations to Brodie Grave, whose stunning night-time photograph of the School of Mines in Reefton is the winner of the Tohu Whenua category in ’s Documenting our Heritage competition, announced on Saturday.

The School of Mines was established in the late 1880s to serve the Inangahua area. The School offered courses by correspondence and a free identification and assay service for new discoveries of ore. With the decline of quartz mining in the area in later years the School placed more emphasis on coal-mining. Before its closure in 1970 it had begun to offer assistance to uranium prospectors.

The competition called for photographs of Heritage-listed properties in Te Tai Poutini West Coast and was judged by well-known photographer Stewart Nimmo .

Ngā mihi nui to Pounamu Pathway in Māwhera Greymouth for generously sponsoring the award of a family pass.

All the images will be on display at Hokitika Museum in a free exhibition from 15-31 March. The photos will also be added to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’s online New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero

Huge thanks also to Great Journeys New Zealand, Hokitika Museum and Department of Conservation

The sign says it all, 60 years of flying over our New Zealand skies. Farewell the mighty C130H. It was pretty cool to see such a massive crowd show as much interest in them on their final day as there was when they arrived new into Wellington in 1965. ✈️✈️✈️
