We have fit so much life into this past year. It's been an incredible adventure with mountain highs and deep lows. We have learnt about ourselves, we have learnt about the world and built a clearer idea of how we want to live in it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks for letting me push you waaaay outside your comfort zone. I'm proud of you and stoked to have such a strong and beautiful human to share this journey with.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also, thank you to all the beautiful souls we have met on this journey, you know who you are, and you always have a place if you decide to travel down to Aotearoa.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now it's time to return home and begin some adventures of a different kind.

A woman from the Zapotec village of Lachatao. I met her while she was out sweeping the cobbled streets, she explained to me that part of living here means doing community service once per month on a Sunday. Every Sunday you'll see local villagers out sweeping, cleaning and generally making the town look nice. Makes we wonder what our towns and cities would be like if we adopted this system and everyone had to partake in some humbling yard work once a month??

Accessing these remote mountain villages in the Sierra Norte was a bit of a challenge but the adventure always pays off with spectacular views, and friendly locals very interested in a couple of wandering kiwis in their streets.

There is sadness but also laughter, singing and toasts with Mezcal and hot chocolate as people remember their loved ones. To celebrate life also means to embrace death as a part of the journey.

These ladies were kind enough to let me photograph them as they decorated their grave with marigold and red cockscomb flowers.

I had the opportunity to attend the local Puerto Escondido cemetery for day of the dead celebrations. A beautiful tradition celebrating life and remembering loved ones who have moved on to the next.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Families clean and prepare the graves. Then they create decorative altars with offerings of traditional foods, mezcal, cacao and of course the sacred marigolds. The bright colour and strong scent guiding the dead as they come to visit during the celebrations.

The sandy streets of La Punta.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We came here intending to stay for a few weeks and we are still here almost 3 months later. This beautiful little surf village has become home. New friends, amazing surf, fresh coconuts and glorious pineapples have kept us firmly in place. It has been a healing stay on many levels but now looking forward to exploring some more of before our return home to NZ in December.
