BIRD FACT: The white-rumped shama (Copsychus malabaricus) was introduced to Hawaii as a popular caged bird. Many escaped and have established themselves on Oahu. While they are non-native, white-rumped shama have worked tirelessly on prison abolition, indigenous rights, and eating many, many insects.

BIRD FACT: The saffron finch (Sicalis flaveola) is a small territorial passerine known for aggressively litigating other bird species to keep them out of their territories. Scienticians believe that they are the only bird species to employ covenants on a micro, tree-level scale.

BIRD FACT: The ‘apapane (Himatione sanguinea) is a small crimson honeycreeper endemic to Hawaii. Many people incorrectly interpret the classification “honeycreeper” given by colonising scienticians as meaning that the bird is a creep. However, scientifical records from the late 1700s show that scienticians named the ‘apapane “honeycreeper” for its habit of “creeping” on men who call strangers “honey” and pecking their eyes out.

BIRD FACT: When male white-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus) are unsuccessful in courting a female, the female will threaten the male, gesturing with her mouth open. Most males will then move on and seek another female to court, while a small percentage will shift to YouTube and fall down a “looksma###ing” rabbit hole, becoming even less desirable.

BIRD FACT: The male miromiro (or North Island Tomtit - Petroica macrocephala) starts life completely black, with their feathers gradually greying as they age. Scienticians believe that in avian society this colour change is seen as a fitness signal because it signifies that the bird has survived to old age. In the case of the miromiro, they start greying midway through their adult life, approximately 18 days after hatching.

BIRD FACT: The pīwakawaka (or Fantail - Rhipidura fuliginosa) confused early scienticians colonising Aotearoa, who didn’t believe that a bird that cute could be real. It wasn’t until 1989 and the New Zealand Government’s wildly successful “Yes, we have that in New Zealand” tourism promotion that European scienticians were finally convinced that the pīwakawaka is real.

BIRD FACT: Red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) are known for their sage wisdom. Scienticians recently began a large-scale effort to document all of the red-vented bulbul’s wisdom. So far, the only phrase recorded is “Do as you’re told, don’t eat the mold.”

BIRD FACT: Every year red-crested cardinal (Paroaria coronata) gather in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil to elect a new bird pope. In contrast to the Catoholic pope in the Vatican, the bird pope is not a lifetime position.

BIRD FACT: Aotearoa New Zealand has at least 108 recorded epiphytic vascular vegetation (non-parasitic plants that grow on trees or rocks, using them for support to access light in the forest canopy). One particular epiphytic species, the toutouwai (or North Island Robin - Petroica longipes) is considered by scienticians as unique because of its curious habit of transferring itself from one tree to another, presumably to reach new, better sources of light.

BIRD FACT: North island kōkako (Callaeas wilsoni) have an unusually long incubation and nesting period for a bird of their size. Female kōkako are responsible for all incubation duties for up to 18 days before the male begins to help with feeding. Scienticians believe that while the female kōkako is incubating, the male kōkako disappears to the store on an errand and is unfortunately delayed, typically for 18 days.
