A male Pāpango/New Zealand Scaup flaps his wings in the water of Waimanu Lagoons in Waikanae.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend visiting Waimanu Lagoons, right beside Waikanae estuary. The place is filled with dozens of species of waterbirds ranging from scaups, coots, pukeko, s**gs and spoonbills. I've captured some of my favourite images while visiting this location, and to add to that collection is this image which is probably my
favourite Scaup image now!

Did you know that Pāpango are NZ's only resident diving duck species? While we occasionally get vagrant visitors such as the Hardhead duck. The NZ Scaup is our only species of diving duck. The other species are all what we call dabbling ducks, which don't (typically) dive under the water to find food. NZ used to have a species of Merganser which is also considered a diving duck species, however they are long extinct.

Window Into The Canopy

A young North Island Kaka sits in a tree at the upper Kaka feeders.

Usually it's quite difficult to capture a sharp and interesting photo of birds moving about in the bush and canopies of Zealandia. Most shots end up blurry and with the bird hiding their head. However, once you finally capture an image worth keeping, it's one of the highlights of the day. Encouragement to keep trying for the best image you can take.

The two s**gs were displaying a behaviour known as allopreening. This is when one bird preens another.

The second image looks like they're whispering secrets to each other, haha!

At the time of taking this image, these birds had not yet built a nest but apparently they have been displaying signs that they may soon start nest building and join their pairs with a full nest.

I love how inquisitive this male Korimako/New Zealand Bellbird looks.

The Bellbirds at like to sip up the drips of sugar water from the Kaka feeders that land on the perch, and with their small and nimble bodies they're able to get past the guard that keeps the Tui out.

The dash of vibrant blue across his face is the pollen from the Kotukutuku/Tree Fushia flower. This pollen usually ends up staining the face of Bellbirds giving them them quite the blue tint.

Gulls in the Cool

A Red-billed Gull flock stand together on a cold and breezy afternoon.

Usually while editing my photos I take out the overwhelming blue tones to match closer to how the colours actually are in life. However I decided to leave this one with a blue tone so give a bit of an artistic flair.

The day was cloudy and grey, very cold with a chilling breeze. This greyish-blue colour really helps pull this feel into the image and tell a little bit of the story about that day.
