This comes with a story, as many of my images do. This image is a crop from a larger panorama and it is focus stacked. I had set up almost at High Camp and well above Thorung Phedi. The set of images would take over two hours to shoot.

People passed during this time, headed toward High Camp and Thorung La. As I worked a young red headed woman walked up to me and we talked. She was clearly Irish. In her rich brogue, she explained that she was going over the pass. I was concerned, because she: was wearing a summer dress; a summer hat; a cardigan; sandals and over her shoulder carried a woven bag with a few unknown belongings.

I explained to her that the crossing was not trivial; that I could see that her gear was fully inappropriate for a crossing. Even well prepared the crossing is non-trivial - anything can happen. She reassured me and continued on. I followed to High Camp after the shoot, and immediately began asking questions of people I met. No one had seen her. I questioned everyone I met in my crossing, the following day; and when I got down from the pass. Not a single person had seen her.

To this day, I have no understanding of that contact and the outcome of her crossing.

Just headed up to Symes Hut on the side of Mt. Taranaki. The wide angle lens on my camera has rendered an image devoid of all drama. I will do better. Three nights.

An explanation of scale.

It is difficult to wrap your head around the size of some of the finished images, available through my website. None of the images can be loaded to my website in full resolution, the site would simply never load - we know this. Therefore the website is comprised low resolution images, only, however when a print is produced it is produced from the full resolution image ... and this is why they are sharp at very large sizes.

Consider the two images shown here. The (roughly) 1x1 image, showing a slice of village life, is a very small crop from the full resolution image (the print quality one). The second shot is a low resolution scene that shows a yellow box that indicates where the 'cropped image' is taken from.

That was a demonstration of scale.

Here are some numbers to consider. The cropped image is ~3-4Mb, the image showing the yellow box is a little larger than that. The entire full resolution (TIF) image, of this scene is 693Mb, in size.

In my range of very large full resolution images (that we print from), image sizes range from ~500Mb to ~1700Mb (~1.6Gb), currently. At the high end, that is approximately 3x the size of the full resolution of this scene.

Think about that. Depending on format (rectangular dimensions) this equates to a minimum print size of 1m x 2m to maximum print size 2m x 6m. That is an entire wall in a large room (on the larger end of the scale)....
.. with fine detail. And with depth of field from foreground to infinity (ie. sharp focus throughout the scene, from front to back). No fall off in focus due to lens aperture limitations.

Please let me know if you would like further information about this, unless you are familiar with the relationship of resolution and file size it can be difficult to imagine.

As always, the range of images currently on sale can be seen on my website. The above information may help you understand some of the information found in the details of each of the images. This explanation can also be found there. Thanks.

The last of the prints I currently have. A B&W street scene from Pokhara. Some people there make a living by collecting garbage and taking it to the recycling centre. When the sacks are filled they are loaded onto the cycle, creating a comically hazardous sight. In this instance the young man seemed suddenly, and momentarily, uncertain of his company - but in true stoic Nepali fashion he set his jaw and cycled on.

Once more, ILFORD SMOOTH PEARL 310gsm Photo Luster. Still very nice in reality. It should be noted that dialing in the print process is a work in progress, while they are very good, I believe they can be better.

As mentioned, I intend to provide more tangible information as and when I print various images. That is to say a photo of the printed image, with real time size comparison. There is an image from Nepal (Thorung La) and one from Australia (The Pinnacles). For these two images, this is as small as I will print.

These are printed on the lesser paper (I plead poverty), ILFORD SMOOTH PEARL 310gsm Photo Luster. Still very nice in reality. It should be noted that dialing in the print process is a work in progress, while they are very good, I believe they can be better.

Mt. Aspiring National Park, New Zealand - possibly late 1980s, I cannot recall. This is an old scan from an analog 5"x4" sheet slide (Fuji Velvia ISO 50 I think). It was shot on Linhof Technika Fieldview camera, with either a Schneider, Zeiss or Linhof lens.

It was shot somewhere near Cascades Saddle. This gear weighed a ton, my weekend pack used to be 30kg+. On this occasion I was walking the Dart Valley, so it was larger than that.

An epic journey, the section in the river valley was awash, the tops were a continuous flow of water; the sides of the valley were awash with a 50mm constant flow of water; stream crossings were hazardous torrents; the Dart River was in flood carrying large trees swept down the valley (jet boats were unable to transit tourists).

Wet to the skin, I spoke a mantra for warmth. God what a trip.

In 2014, I rested from my trek in Pokhara, as is often the best option for trekkers. Rest, food, and watching the people going about their day.

There is a rare (at that time) recycling centre in Pokhara and a number of people cycle around the city collecting recycling and transporting it to the centre, for a fee. It is a living, that some said was reasonably lucrative - I do not know, it did not seem so to me, perhaps it is a relative term or perhaps the people who said as much had a skewed perspective. Either way ...

This was a tense moment for this young man, book-ended as he was by two formidable men of leisure.
