Photo shoot at the beach
Planning a photo shoot means deciding on a location that’s going to work for the client and, most importantly, the doggo. That’s part of the conversation I have with clients beforehand. For Rosie, it was an easy choice - beach is her happy place. Not so much a swimmer but definitely a stick chaser. One thing that really stood out for me on this shoot was the colour in Rosie’s coat seemed to take on an extra vibrance in this location. The late afternoon light brought that out but it was also the location with the colours of sand, sea and dune grass that created the palette that shows her off.

What a great event the Western Bay District Council put on with the Doggy Day Out. I spent the day with Nick and the crew from Omokoroa Pet Vets. Talked to so many dogs and their people.

Taz was a special character. Being a Dachshund X Poodle he had the spirtited attitude of the Dachsy , and fortunately, the longer legs of the Poodle. As an action dog he loved to use those legs, swimming, chasing the big dogs, agility and playing soccer. He also had the calmness to occasionally work as a model displaying products for commercial photo shoots. Taz has been gone for 10 years now. You never forget these special family members, but for me, having his portrait on the wall makes me smile at his spirit whenever I stop to pause and look at him.

Making pictures of pets all started with Pluto. He was a special character who was particularly in touch with his people. The images I made of him back then have become so important for us. Some of those images are still my favourites, but then they would be wouldn’t they.
These images of Pluto were shot 2009-2012, ever since pet portraiture has been a part of what I do. Photographing dogs for the council’s adoption programme, working with ARRC animal rescue, photographing pets for clients and shooting (we call this training) thousands of images of our own dogs. I particularly remember the occasions when I was asked to capture images of doggos in their final days or weeks. Perhaps for me it’s that connection back to the spirit of Pluto.
Introducing Tail Tales. Come 2024 and it’s time to step up the game and focus firstly on pet photography. The service Tail Tales offers is much more than just a photo shoot of a furry friend. It’s about creating art works that are a lasting tribute to a treasured pet and to celebrate the relationship they have with their people.

It was a delight to photograph Chris and Jessie's wedding. Summer of '22 '23 will not be remembered for it's hot days out in the sun. For this day, hot and sunny was meant to be. Storm the weekend before and two days later, the cyclone. The location by the river in the quiet back-blocks of the Wairarapa created a distinct character to this event....
