We have just returned from another trip down into Central Otago and this time we had a few photoshoot destinations that we had either missed last trip or the weather hadnt been playing ball for us..!

We had been further down towards Clyde the week before and shifted camp up to Oturehua this week where we asked around to find the owner and telephone contact to ask permission to photograph a historic old world set of farm buildings away out in the hills... we also asked if we could take our van and park up onsite from which we were granted all requests..
After late afternoon set up of the van we went up to the photoshoot area as the sun was descending however and often with us dense cloud gathered which blocked all evening sunlight glow...
I guess we sat around for almost two hours before finally deciding that nothing of value was going to be achieved so headed back to the van...
All of a sudden, this last shaft of light descended to the hills behind so raced back to capture this stunning image.... talk about lucky...!

RIGHT ON TIME….!

A couple of weeks back we received the sad news that William and Diane who have owned and run the TAIT GALLERY in Hanmer Springs were closing the doors and retiring..
We have known this beautiful couple for several years, and over this time they have sold quite a number of our art pieces..

Talking with William over the phone a few days ago,we discussed all the good times that we have shared and with that discussed Mandy and I travelling up to pick up our two current art pieces on display this day (Saturday)… I said we would be up there late morning however events at home saw us delayed for a couple of hours, finally arriving up there just on 3pm to see William outside his Gallery waiting for us with a huge grin on his face…

Diane has just sold not one but both of your displayed art pieces ten minutes ago…… William said that should we had been on time earlier then I guess you would have been taking your art pieces back home…
Now Mandy and I looked at each other and immediately assumed that William was pulling our leg but alas he was telling the truth..

The purchasing couple returned while we were still there and bought a third art piece this time from another artist, and while there they asked us several questions regarding how we go about producing each piece …. One of the interesting things the chaps wife said was initially they couldn’t decide whether our imagery was a painting or a photograph…?

Now this was interesting, as when we first supplied these art pieces behind glass, walking into the gallery there were about a dozen punters in the gallery to be asked by one of them…. Are these paintings or photographs… ? being curious I then asked everyone there , for a straw poll which each thought…?

Around 2/3 thought these were paintings…….. I explained that the Hahnemuhle fine art photo rag printing medium does change a straight photo image into something that indeed does take on a fine painting look….amazing…!

The Clarence river looking down stream towards the historic Acheron Accommodation house built in 1863 out of local sourced clay and tussock mix cob walls along with woven tussock roof, it was a horse change and stop over for guests travelling via stage coach between Christchurch and Nelson, a trip back in those days must have been quite an adventure all on its own....!

A very apt caption for this gorgeous and popular art piece..!

Mandy and I had decided while visiting Central to head up and over the Thompson gorge track, a track as we found out that was in places a bit of a challenge for our town four wheel drive, with mud and blog holes as well as river crossings but.... we made it thru to Bendigo
Along the trail and off the road to one side sits this stone hut, and a various spacings good old number eight fencing wire was strung from one side of the roof to the other with equal weight river stones wired to hold the huts roof on when the winds arrive.... interesting but effective I guess...

Normally we print and frame to order, however due to one client ordering and then disappearing we have one Hanhemuhle fine art canvas print framed in a medium grey colour already made up here at our workshop measuring 1.4 metres wide x 90cm high of Hanging Rock that we would be happy to discount... contact us to view..!

Stop the car.....! a voice with urgency emulated from the passenger side seat.. being the dutiful driver I slammed on the brakes, pulling to the side of this back country road as I asked ......what have you seen..? NO ANSWER was returned except for the closing of said passenger door, hardly even before coming to a complete stop...

Twisting my head to the "opposite lock" noticed Mandy armed with camera now up against a farmers boundary fence pointing her camera seemingly at not much..!

But alas...! I should have known better.... this gorgeous weather beaten fence complete with years of Westland grown vegetation still attached, makes for a great photo subject....PERFECT..!

Camping at Ranfurly, Mandy and I had an evening meal a local eatery, and while there got yarning ( yes again) to a couple of the local folks who were interested in what we did..!
Have you heard of the old Gold Vault away out in the "whap whaps" one of them asked.? No was our answer...! a well worth while trip, but its located on private land and if the owner isn't around then its a wasted trip..
They gave us vague directions, and also said the road out there gets a bit rough in places...so... always up for an adventure, and as usual with us.. we are very good at getting lost..lol

Next morning after a couple of hours driving out in the "sticks" so to speak we rounded a bend to run into a chap mowing his roadsides, so stopped to ask directions to the Vault.. to be answered...you have arrived..!

The owners were initially a bit cagey, but after a bit more yarning showed us in and also talked quite a bit about the building.

Gold Prospectors, of the day had a problem... how to secure their findings from the field to the gold buyers without someone else stealing it, so this stone building was built out of very stury structure material of the day, and inside all along the three walls away from the front, were heavy "dee rings" set into the wall ..

The vault has heavy steel bars over the windows and a very sturdy front door... Impressive..!
Gold Prospectors for a fee could hire a strong box that was chained to the wall to deposit their findings until the gold buyers next visit.... fascinating building and story..!

One cannot help to think... who would be brave enough to guard such a complex...one would have his life in his hands on a daily basis I would think..!

" Heritage " series library
We had pulled up at this location and within a couple of minutes an "old digger" came wondering along, which as many of you will know we like a bit of a yarn, anyway we got the full run down on this historic icon..!
Built as a country primary school back in the late 1800's it served its purpose for many years until the decline in pupil numbers as families moved away in search of work, then a succession of school teachers, many of whom didnt stay long all led to the schools demise..
Today it has been converted to a family bach.

We love the autumn colour hues, coupled with its country setting and secure front gate, all made for a gorgeous peaceful photograph.
