Tucked away in the South Island near Queenstown, Skippers Canyon is a dizzying road carved by hand in the 1880s to reach one of the richest goldfields of the Otago Gold Rush. Miners risked life and limb to access the canyon, and even today, driving its narrow cliff-hugging track is a thrill. It’s deemed one of the most dangerous roads to traverse in the Southern hemisphere. In fact, most rental car insurance doesn’t even cover you here.

Ruins of the old township still remain including a schoolhouse, cemetery, and other relics.

Skippers Canyon was also a featured location on the set of The Lord of the Rings.

The surreal, otherworldly landscapes of New Zealand’s West Coast are a sight to behold, especially at this unique coastal location where the land meets the sea in an extraordinary display of nature’s artistry. The rugged coastline, shaped over millennia by relentless waves and fierce winds, reveals honeycomb rock formations and tide pools that seem almost alien in their appearance. As the golden light of the setting sun casts long shadows, this wild and untamed stretch of the coast offers a glimpse into a world where time stands still, inviting both wonder and reflection.

The Remutaka Mountain Range stretches over 40 kilometers and separating the Wellington region from the Wairarapa. The range’s highest peak, Mount Matthews, stands at 941 meters within the lush Remutaka Forest Park. Renamed from Rimutaka in 2017, the area is historically significant, with the Remutaka Incline once being one of the world’s steepest railways, used during World War I to transport soldiers.

Geologically, the range was formed by tectonic activity along the Wellington Fault and features diverse flora like rimu and kahikatea trees, and fauna including the endangered North Island brown kiwi. Popular hiking tracks and the Remutaka Rail Trail offer a glimpse into its past, while the Remutaka Cycle Trail is part of the NZ Cycle Trail network.

The range is known for heavy rainfall, contributing to its rich ecosystem with rivers and streams. Its name, ā€˜Remutaka,’ translates to ā€˜sitting down to rest’ in Maori, reflecting its significance. Historical Maori trails connected tribes, enabling trade and communication. The area offers birdwatching opportunities for tui and kereru and panoramic views of Wellington Harbour and the Wairarapa Plains. A visit here unveils both natural beauty and deep historical roots.
