Tulips and poppies. Theatre in a vase. More than just documenting what is there, photography is about creating a moment, looking for the drama, the movement, the shadows, the unexpected shapes and the space between the blooms. The playfulness of a twisted stem, a clutched fist shape poppy head about to open, the way a delicate papaver catches the light so perfectly and an overblown double tulip steals the show and is often mistaken for a peony. We call it painting with light, your eye is drawn initially to the lightest parts first but then your curiosity draws you into the shadows. I absolutely love it when people are seeing my work printed and framed, faces almost touching the glass as they experience all the details, is it a painting? I get asked this all the time. I take this as a great compliment.

These would have to be my favourite flowers and especially the parrot variety, I just love the way the light touches the beautiful feathery edges of these golden blush tulips. New print available on my website. ‘Golden Wings’.

That time in summer when the heat lasts long into the evening, cicadas are singing and the garden is overflowing with so many beautiful flowers, dahlias, roses, hydrangeas, zinnias, sunflowers, rudbeckia. Bees follow me into my studio and butterflies float through the garden beds. It’s all just a sweet memory but spring is just around the corner and I’m getting to those images I photographed last season with the chilly winter temperatures keeping me inside. The vase, a heirloom piece belonging to my sister restrains the colour palette, green with soft yellows and plum tones. I tried as hard as I could to keep the palette tight to complement the vase but this is challenging for me because I can only use what I pick from my own garden. I chose mostly apricot and creamy roses, dark plum dahlias, pops of yellow sunflowers, old fashioned hydrangeas. There is also a pineapple lily, bronze rudbeckia and pale pink zinnias. My rebellious spirit had to add my favourite dark red rose at the bottom, her name is Astrid Grafin von Hardenberg, the scent is unbelievably beautiful.

Wild abundance, a joyful celebration of summer in the garden, pure chaos like an overgrown garden, less arranged but more gathered and playful.
