Behind the Scenes | Real Meals Campaign

In a time when so much is inauthentic, this campaign is proudly real, just like the product.

We went deep into the New Zealand wilderness with Real Meals founder and adventure legend Nathan Fa'avae, who cooked up a fresh Tom Kha G*i using raw ingredients, which is exactly the way each Real Meals pouch starts its life before being freeze-dried.

The concept? Show that even in a remote alpine setting, you can end the day with something that feels like it was made by your own personal chef, because in a way, it was.

For the shoot, we didn’t fake a thing. Real food. Real people. Real location. Because when the adventure is real, the food should be too.

Even in this remote mountain setting, Nathan cooked up a mean feast. We opened a few pouches of the real thing to compare. Can you guess which version we preferred?

In this video, we wanted to get creative and capture the essence of what sets Real Meals apart. Our goal was to showcase that Real Meals are chef-made meals,...

I’m excited to see SONY announce the A9 III with global shutter. That’s a big deal for me because I love shooting outside using strobes. In bright daylight, sync speed can be an issue with the Nikon z8 or z9 for example. It will still be a while before we have global shutter and high resolution, but I’m just saying.

If you want to know what global shutter is without knowing all the details, here’s a quick video from B&H that gives you all you need to know…

When I look at this image that I took 2 years ago that was recently published in Australian Geographic, I realise how much my photography has changed over the past few years. Back then I was paid to take tourism photographs of people moving through or looking at this beautiful Aotearoa.

The photographs I’m taking now are quite different.

The trend is still to show tourists observing or seeking - as the latest tourism New Zealand campaign suggests. These days I’m interested in the something else.

What’s it like to not seek? To be still in one place and take it in. To be part of the environment, instead of just going to a spot - observing - and moving on; what’s it like to spend some time in one place. And make it a part of us. And us part of it.

There is an unseen life that dreams us; it knows our true direction and destiny. We can trust ourselves more than we realize, and we need have no fear of change.
