From yesterday's Tawharanui Regional Park visit:
Spotting a kiwi in the wild is an almost spiritual-like experience, most of the New Zealanders haven't seen a Kiwi in the wild. It's very rare to see them at Daytime because they are nocturnal birds. Extremely rare to have the proper gear and take a good photo of that rare encounter.

Canon EOS R7 with RF 600mm f/4 lens

New Zealand dotterel - Geographical variation: Two subspecies, both extant: northern New Zealand dotterel C. o. aquilonius (At Risk/Recovering); southern New Zealand dotterel C. o. obscurus (Threatened/Nationally Critical).

"New Zealand dotterels breed in monogamous pairs, and vigorously defend territories against other dotterels. The nests of northern New Zealand dotterels are simple scrapes in the substrate, sometimes sparsely lined or decorated, often with a marker of driftwood or vegetation. Three eggs are laid, usually from August or September, and are replaced if lost. Incubation usually takes 28-30 days."

Kākā (bush parrot) is generally heard before they are seen.
When I'm hiking around Tawharunui Open Sanctuary the calls of the Kākā are my guide of their location. Their call is a harsh, repeated, rhythmic “ka-aa” when flying above the forest canopy, harsh grating “kraak” alarm call when disturbed.

Last night, I saw some Spoonbills waiting for sunset and getting ready to fly out of Western Spring Lake. They usually arrived at the lake early in the morning and leave by sunset. The best opportunity to photograph them flying in flocks during the early morning with good light so that you can use a faster shutter speed at a lower ISO. Usually, they circle the lake twice before they land on their favorite tree. Canon EOS R5

Australasian Gannet (tākapu)
Visited the colony a few days ago and saw a parent gannet with its newly laid egg. Its nest is made of a rough mound of seaweed and grass, cemented together by excreta. The Australasian gannet can only successfully incubate a single egg. Both sexes share the incubation duty, and later brood the chick on the top of their webbed feet. Canon EOS R5

The Australasian Gannet (tākapu) can only successfully incubate a single egg. Both parents share the incubation duty, and later brood the chick on the top of their webbed feet. Feeds are delivered by both parents as incomplete regurgitations, which the chick receives by pushing its bill into the parents’ throats.
Fledglings from New Zealand fly directly to Australia, and typically do not return to their home colonies until their third year. Some New Zealand breeders migrate to Australian and Tasmanian waters to winter between breeding seasons. Australasian gannets often breed with the same partner over consecutive seasons. Some birds retain the same mate for the rest of their lives.

Stitchbird (hihi) - Notiomystis cincta
Canon EOS R5

The stitchbird (hihi) was both rare and poorly known until the 1990s, as few people had an opportunity to visit the single remnant population on Little Barrier Island. However, thanks to successful conservation management and research, the stitchbird is now one of the better studied New Zealand bird species and can be seen at several accessible translocation sites. Stitchbirds are often curious, approaching people for close examination whilst emitting warning calls; yet the calls’ high pitch, and the bird’s rapid movements and colouration can make them hard to detect.
