Honouring precious Adie 💜🐾💜

For the past 16 years, (and 4 months) a major part of my life has been Adie.

Adie was my constant companion, and for the whole of Wonderbird's life, she was right beside me.

She came with me on photoshoots, where she'd greet everyone with love. So happy to be on an adventure with her mama, bringing joy to my wonderful clients.

She'd sit patiently beside my tripod while I photographed night skies, snuggling in to keep each other warm.

She'd sleep on my desk while I edited photographs or designed, often with her head or tail on my keyboard. Always as close as possible.

Adie was there with me through the busy days, the quiet days, big projects, difficult times, computer-break walks on the beach, and all the ordinary moments in between.

Adie and I ran Wonderbird together.

On the 23rd of July, at 2.20am, I had to say goodbye to Adie. She stayed beside me for as long as her adorable doggie body could allow.

And now, everything feels very different.

The studio feels different.

No more doggie paws helping me pack my camera bag before shoots.

My sounding board is no longer here. Gosh, we chatted away to each other all day, every day.

And I keep looking at my feet and beside my keyboard.

Adie has been part of the story of Wonderbird right from the beginning, and I don't want to leave her out of it now just because things have sadly changed.

I carry her, and all our wonderful 16 years and 4 months of memories, right with me.

So today, I honour and thank my precious life and work co-creator. And learn to walk beside you in a different form now.

Mini brand identity • Website design • Website build

Lately I've been working with a few lovely new businesses, helping turn ideas into brands that feel considered, cohesive and ready to launch.

This project was for a boutique yoga studio opening in Karori, Wellington. From the logo and visual identity through to the website design and build, every element was created to give the business a calm, welcoming and professional presence from day one.

I love working with small businesses at this stage of their journey. There's something really rewarding about taking a vision that's still taking shape and bringing it to life across every touchpoint.

"A new exhibition following New Zealand artist Yuki Kihara’s exploration of Pacific history through her alter-ego Salome. Inspired by the 1886 photograph “Samoan Half Caste”, Kihara uses photography, video and sculpture-like costumes to portray herself as a fictitious Sāmoan woman resurrected from the 19th century. A wonderful evening to be a part of and to photograph — Emily of Alamandria exhibition opening The Sacred Grove at Thistle Hall in Wellington.

Seeing Emily’s large-scale paintings together on the wall was breathtaking. So much time, care, and dedication sits within these works — decades of creative practice brought into one space.

Congratulations, Emily — what a beautiful body of work.

It’s always a privilege to use design for something that truly matters.

I recently had the opportunity to work with Water Safety NZ on the design direction for their latest drowning report. It’s a sobering document. Behind every statistic is a life, a whānau, a community affected.

When the topic is as serious as water safety in Aotearoa, good design isn’t about decoration — it’s about responsibility. It’s about helping insights land, helping patterns be seen, and supporting communication that can contribute to change.

I genuinely love report design and infographics — the challenge of shaping complex information into something clear, accessible, and engaging. In this case, my role was to create the look and feel and spec up the templates so the data could be communicated with clarity, consistency, and care.

A special bonus on this project was working alongside an old buddy, Glen Scanlon, now Chief Executive of Water Safety NZ, and collaborating with his fantastic team. It’s always a privilege to work with such great people on mahi that truly matters.

A small reset.

Over the past seven years my presence here has been… irregular. Life, work, healing, and change all had a say in that.

Recently, I moved Wonderbird’s studio from a little cabin into the house. For Love. Adie is in her senior years now and prefers fewer stairs — and because we both want as much togetherness as we’ve always had. So here we are.

In the process of moving, I uncovered an old portfolio from my student days. So much early thinking, experimentation, and a few real gems. It reminded me how easy it is to forget our foundations once we’re busy being “established”. I don’t want to lose that part of the story.

I’m also converting the cabin into a small product photography studio. Excited to explore this next chapter while keeping Wonderbird’s work grounded in thoughtful creativity.

This year I’d like to approach social media with a bit more intention, ease and joy. To reconnect, to share a little more of Wonderbird’s day-to-day now, the places that shape my work, and the path that led me here.

No big promises. Just giving it my best shot and showing up, thoughtfully.

✨ 📸 It was such a joy to photograph Lotty Roberts and Lorissa Garcia (Assembly Culture) in action at their Workplace Rituals Deck Masterclass in Te Whanganui-a-Tara last week.

I loved capturing the energy in the room — the calm focus, the laughter, and the sense of genuine connection between everyone there.

Lotty’s reflection about the day really sums it up — a reminder of how powerful it is to be in spaces where people feel supported, seen, and free to be real.

Congrats to all the newly certified Workplace Rituals Deck practitioners — what a beautiful, connected day to document.

🌟 Well it ain’t over till it’s over — and what a delight it was to be invited by the Paekākāriki Station Museum to head out on another shoot this Saturday, this time to the Wellington Tramway Museum in Queen Elizabeth Park.

I always love uncovering the gems we have right nearby, places we maybe don’t visit often for whatever reason — and this was a truly lovely visit. A big thanks to the team there!

Here’s a little bit of what I learned:
🛤 Did you know Wellington’s first trams began with steam‐powered service on 24 August 1878 — the first city steam tram service in the southern hemisphere?

🐴Then came horse-trams, and by 30 June 1904 the first electric tram ran, signalling a new era of urban travel across Wellington.

🙏The old tram system finally closed on 2 May 1964, and today the Tramway Museum preserves and operates many of the historic trams from that era.

One of the most memorable parts of the day — Meeting a lovely lady who came to the museum to walk down memory lane — she used to catch the tram to and from school in Island Bay in Wellington.

And the enthusiasts running the museum — Full of passion, care and generous with stories. Their dedication to restoring these trams, running them through the dunes and wetlands of Queen Elizabeth Park, and keeping the history alive is inspiring.

I absolutely love jobs like this — where I get to learn, be curious, and meet interesting people. 😊 Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a rich experience.
