I keep hearing and reading ‘sharks are needed to regulate ecosystems as they eat injured or dead/rotten fish’. Ermmm, what? Have you ever seen what a shark, or well, almost any animal is capable of when it needs to eat? Other than perhaps a neonatal or sick shark, they really don’t need to scavenge on injured or dead fish. Of the 550+ species of sharks most of them are fantastic, adapted hunters, some even considered top, apex predators. E.g. White sharks, tigers, bulls etc.
I just don’t get why we’re still playing down sharks? Some tiny little fish are aggressive, competent hunters so why put sharks in this puppy dog light suggesting we can swim and touch any wild shark while acting like they don’t hunt with skill and intention? It’s ok to highlight and celebrate sharks for what they truly are – diverse, well evolved, smart, skilled, sensitive, nervous, patient and just sometimes aggressive, focused, threatening and incredibly intimidating.
In a world of misinformation, just know all sharks are different, even within species and guess what? That’s ok! We don’t need to convince the world their harmless we need to show and convince the world we’re killing most sharks at an unsustainable, and in some instances irreversible rate.
There’s lots of ways to help, but if you want to truly HELP SHARKS, start by selecting who influences you. My advice? Remove tuna from your diet, and ask others to do the same. Take 10 minutes out of your day to Google the bycatch associated with the tuna industry and view the millions of sharks killed as collateral damage each year; it’s disgusting, devastating, and sadly a very real and true threat to sharks.
