On Wednesday, 97 Mahoenui Giant Wētā were released into the safe sanctuary of Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust — now officially the 5th site in Aotearoa/NZ where this taonga species can be found. This release also marks Rotokare’s very first invertebrate translocation — a huge milestone for the sanctuary and for wētā conservation.

Massive appreciation to everyone that made this happen.

Welcome Swallows/Warou (Hirundo neoxena) are a familiar sight across Aotearoa New Zealand today, but they’re actually self-introduced visitors. These agile little birds made their own way here from Australia in the 1950s - likely windblown, gradually spreading across the country. With their glossy blue backs, long tail streamers, and graceful flight, Warou have become a much-loved part of our native landscape.

Even at home, half a km or so away from the spot I'm standing at, you can not only hear, but feel the boulders smashing their way down the awa - a constant rumble, vibrating and droning in the background. Quite surreal.

Spotted this little whānau while servicing one of my backyard traplines recently. Seeing these guys really cemented the importance of consistent and quality trapline servicing. Its also helped me to realise that all the effort is absolutely worth it.
