‼️ Whānau in the Kaiteretere/Riuwaka area, please limit wastewater use until later this evening‼️

This includes sinks, washing machines, dishwashers and toilets.

There has been damage to a wastewater pipe near the Motueka Bridge and crews are repairing the damage now. They are trying to contain the spill as much as possible but inevitably some will have drained through the soil and will get to the awa. It is hoped repairs are complete by 9pm.

Yesterday, our Wakapuaka whānau, in partnership with landowners, the Kidson family, Richard and Eliner Usher, and Nelson City Council, unveiled a new artwork beside the Wakapuaka Awa.
Crafted from corten steel, the sculpture acknowledges wai as a taonga and marks the completion of a restoration project that has been more than four years in the making.
Wakapuaka whānau - Andrew Stephens reflected on the success of the River Restoration Mauri Project, which surpassed its planting target with more than 70,000 native plants established along sections of the awa. He highlighted how restoring the surrounding forest and improving river health have remained key priorities for everyone involved. This achievement would not have been possible without the commitment of the Kidson and Usher families as landowners, alongside the leadership and support of Sophia Bisdee, Project Lead at Te Tauihu Environment Trust.
Our CEO, Hēmi Sundgren, who designed the sculpture, spoke about the importance of connectedness, emphasising that wai is essential to all people and all living things. Positioned alongside our tūpuna awa, the artwork celebrates the significance of the Wakapuaka Awa and the many connections that flow ki uta ki tai—from the catchment to the estuary and onward to the moana.
The sculpture serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnected relationship between the land, the water, and the communities they sustain, while honouring the collective efforts that have helped restore and protect this treasured waterway for future generations.🌿

🐦💚 A very special day was had by all at Onetahua/Farewell Spit last week, as eight takahē were welcomed to their new home thanks to the collaborative efforts of Manawhenua ki Mohua (Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Rārua), DOC, Pest Free Onetahua, HealthPost Nature Trust, and the wider Mohua community.

Whānau member Raelene Mason (pictured) said:

"I honestly felt so privileged and it was an honour to be there. I learnt a lot about these beautiful manu and can’t believe I got to do this very, very special work."

The release follows the completion of a predator-proof fence, creating a safe sanctuary for this nationally vulnerable taonga species. After more than 100 years, takahē have returned to Onetahua, an internationally recognised ecosystem known for its incredible biodiversity.

Chair of Manawhenua ki Mohua, Margie Little, says the project reflects cultural leadership, whakapapa connections, and kaitiakitanga, adding, "Our hopes are that the takahē will flourish in their new home and ensure their survival for future generations in Mohua."

Kia ora e te whānau,😀
We’re pleased to share an update on the proposed wharewaka for the Anaweka Waka located in Mohua / Golden Bay.

This kaupapa is being led by Manawhenua ki Mohua, with support from Ngāti Tama alongside Ngāti Rārua, Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Kuia. Our aim is to create a dedicated wharewaka in Tākaka next to the Golden Bay Museum. The wharewaka will be a place to appropriately care for and share this taonga of national significance, and to tell our stories of waka voyaging and celestial navigation.

The wharewaka is proposed to be built on reserve land owned by the Tasman District Council, known as Pioneer Park. We need approval from Council to access the land, but before the Council can make that decision, public consultation needs to take place.
Tasman District Council is now consulting on the proposed use of Pioneer Park in Tākaka as the preferred site for the wharewaka.
This is an important step, and we encourage our whānau to take the time to have their say.

👉 You can support the kaupapa by making a submission through Shape Tasman. Submissions close 22 June.

Last Friday, Te Tauihu Iwi and Waka Kotahi unveiled a new pou - Waimeha.

The corten steel pou stands on the edge of the Waimeha estuary. Waimeha has been a place of deep significance with the awa, the estuary and the surround environs having long functioned as a pātaka and mahinga kai - therefore sustaining Iwi physically, culturally and spiritually. A place where ecosystems converge, where taonga species co-exist and where intergenerational knowledge of harvesting and protection has been practiced and upheld. Ngāti Tama alongside other Te Tauihu Iwi, hold distinct identities, histories and narratives, however, we all share responsibility in protecting and restoring this taonga.

Ruihana Smith (Ngāti Kuia) the designer of the pou, has captured our kōrero and expressed these narratives into the design. Mahinga kai is represented through the tuna (eels) and pātiki (flounder), depicted within the diamond forms. The migration of the kuaka (bar-tailed godwit) is also acknowledged, reflecting the movement and seasonal rhythms that shape this place.

The primary kōwhaiwhai pattern incorporates the mangōpare motif, representing the hammerhead shark and symbolising strength and resilience. The converging mangōpare koru forms express the meeting of fresh and salt water at Waimeha.

E te whānau me ngā hoa aroha,
Kua hinga te tōtara nui o te wao nui a Tāne.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Nathan Zackaria Rei - whānau of Ngāti Tama. He passed peacefully, surrounded by those who love him dearly.

Pānui from his whānau below;

He was a loving father, a proud Koro, and an uncle not only to his own Tamariki, nieces and nephews, but to just about every kid who crossed his path. Children were drawn to him everywhere he went in the world, and he loved them right back – with humor, patience, mischief, warmth, and curiosity. Somehow, no matter where he travelled, he always found the kids, and they always seemed to find him too.

A lover of music, a kaiwhakairo, a traveller, a storyteller, a man who truly lived. He experienced life deeply – the beauty of it, the hardship of it, the adventure of it, and the fight within it.

And he fought.

He battled in ways many people will never fully understand. With strength, stubbornness, fire, and heart. But eventually he was tired of fighting. He was ready. And in the end, there was peace.

We take comfort in knowing he leaves behind the things he loved – his art, his stories, his music, his travels, and the memories he left with the people whose lives he touched along the way.

He carved his mark into this world in more ways than one.

Rest now, Dad. You’ve done enough fighting.
Kei te tangi hotuhotu te ngākau, engari kei te mōhio mātou kua hoki ia ki te kāinga tūturu, ki ōna tīpuna.

Dad will be making his way to Takapuwahia Marae at 3.30 today (Tuesday 12 May 2026)
