Reposting this again, because I think it deserves to be heard again. I am happy to arrange a deal for event groups, but my work takes too much time and effort to be given away for free.
Photo credit WEIRDLY does not pay the bills.
This an open letter on behalf of ALL photographers in NZ
.
It is a NZ culture to want everything for nothing.
I want to state firstly the personal sales have been amazing this year, I don’t think I’ve found a single stolen watermarked photo online, and hardly any from fellow photographers either.
Five years ago, stolen watermarked photos littered social media and it was just an accepted theft. But the culture has changed for the better and I couldn’t be happier, it makes everything worthwhile.
HOWEVER,
Something I deal with a lot this season (4 times in the last few days, and countless times in the last year.) is big companies, news and media outlets emailing me for photos to accompany their articles and advertisements and being surprised that photo credit is not enough to pay for this?
A lot of these are BIG international companies too, and they are shocked when I send them an invoice.
Photographers work bloody hard.
“Oh but that photo took less than a second to take…”
My weekend just been, started at around 7.30am finishing yesterdays website updates , 8am in the ring, shooting until 4/5pm with only small gaps in between classes to get press release photos out - then I edit and upload photos until around 9.30pm … While I love what I do, and I really do, I cant justify to do it for free, Just like you expect to be paid for your daily job or skillset, regardless of how much you enjoy it.
Its never ending frustration from big companies expecting beautiful high resolution images to accompany their stories and adverts when they expect it for free, or worse, you tell them the cost and they argue why the image they want isn’t worth that much, or barter for a better deal.
Too often the creative parties of these deals are significantly under valued.
Don’t get me wrong though, I am super happy to work with companies and arrange mutually beneficial deals, I’m all for small business helping other small businesses.
Support your photographers, support your small businesses and support your friends businesses.
