While looking for banded dotterels as part of our river bird monitoring, we came across ten McCann's skinks over a distance of about 150m. Also found 15 dotterels including one fledgling and seven chicks. 😀

I observed a little egret at Lake Te Anau this morning. Mistaken first for a kōtuku / white heron, but the beak colour and markings around the eyes weren't right. According to NZ Birds Online, little egrets are scarce annual migrants to New Zealand. Definitely a rare sighting in this location.

Another of my monitoring captures, banded dotterel - known to us as Mr Pilsner. I found him injured earlier this month (kept his left leg off the ground), but he miraculously recovered. Never did he miss a beat in defending his growing chicks which have fledged now. What a trooper!

It's been a while since I posted last - monitoring our braided river birds during breeding season takes up a chunk of time. But also allows for some great close-ups. Featured here is a 5 weeks old banded dotterel chick. Not far from fledging and being safe (from predators). 🙂
