We had such a wonderful time yesterday at Queen Elizabeth Park thanks to Masterton District Council and the help of our volunteers. 🫶🏻

The deer were delighted with their photo session and rewarded us with plenty of curious looks in exchange for some fresh juicy lettuce. The birds also enjoyed the extra attention, showing off their wonderful colours and feathers through the lenses of our young photographers. 🦌📷🦜

Next, we’ll be coming to Kapiti on 30 May. If you’ve been meaning to reserve a place and request a spare camera, make sure to register for the workshop on our website as soon as possible. 🙂

Despite challenging weather and the risk of getting completely soaked in 3mm rain 🌧️, we took the chance and were rewarded with beautiful photographs captured through the lenses of young photographers. 📸✨

Thanks to the support from the Horowhenua District Council , we had a wonderful time at our first Levin workshop and the kids were super excited! 🌿 We’re already looking forward to coming back and exploring more places around the area.

We had an amazing time with the kids last weekend at Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton. 📸

Thanks to the support from Masterton District Council ❤️, we’re running a series of workshops to help kids explore the world through the lens.

Inside 80 pages, you’ll find inspiring photos, stories from young creatives, interviews with professional photographers, and simple tips to help kids (and parents) better understand photography.

We are very grateful to Miro Kennett and Sam McGee for sharing their inspiring journeys with us! As well as a very insightful interview with Sandy Hall on creativity and ADHD.

This is more than a magazine. It’s a space for expression, confidence, and seeing the world differently.

If your child loves photography, this is for them.

Merry Christmas 🎄 and season’s greetings from all of us 🌿

As the year comes to a close, we want to say thank you to all the wonderful kids who joined our workshops and brought their curiosity, creativity, and unique way of seeing the world. Watching their confidence grow through photography has been a real joy.

A big thank you as well to parents and whānau for your ongoing support and trust.

We wish you a calm, happy summer break filled with rest, nature, and small moments worth noticing. Looking forward to creating more together in the new year 📷✨

What a way to end the year, celebrating young photographers in Wellington! Our NZ first ever Young Photographer Award night last week was a huge success. 🏆

Just look at the excitement of the award recipients! Congratulations to all of them for achieving incredible results ❤️🎉👏🏻 Huge thanks go to our speakers , Gareth Davies, Miro Kennett, and Nat McDonald 📸

At the event we mentioned that we had run more than 80 workshops for kids since the beginning. After checking properly today, it turns out we delivered more than 140 workshops this year alone!

This wouldn't be possible without the support of our incredible tutors and volunteers Ana Lyubich, Ann Kilpatrick, Joy Tracey, Zhanna Yasinetskaya, Emmeline Plachecki, as well as support from local councils including Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Masterton District Council, Porirua City Council, Palmerston North City Council, and Kapiti Coast District Council ❤️

That includes school sessions with amazing teams at Arakura School and Maungaraki School, afterschool programmes, homeschooling groups, weekend workshops, and private group sessions. Each one ran anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours.

The outcome has been incredible. We were given the chance to see the world through kids’ eyes, through the photographs they chose to capture and share with us. You can see some of their best work in the gallery on our website (https://photographyforkids.org).

Plans for next year? Onwards and upwards. Literally. We’re expanding to Palmerston North, Masterton, and other regions across New Zealand.

We couldn’t be prouder to share this news! One of our young photographers, Craig Curwen, who only started our regular workshops at the beginning of the year, has just won First Prize Youth in the 2025 Whakatipu Wildlife Trust Wildlife Photography Competition with his stunning silvereye shot! Such an incredible achievement and a truly beautiful photo. ❤️

Etanah Lalau Talapa is a multi-disciplinary artist, photographer, and curator of Afega and Sa’anapu heritage from Samoa, working across public installations, digital art, mixed media and photography. Etanah holds a Bachelor of Design in Spatial Design from Massey University and often explores themes of motherhood, family lineage and the lived experiences of the Pacific diaspora in Aotearoa.

Her practice focuses on creating new visual languages that connect traditional and contemporary forms while honouring her Samoan heritage.

We’re thrilled to have Etanah with us next Thursday!

Gareth Davies grew up in Gloucester in the UK and has been hooked on photography since he first borrowed his grandparents Kodak film camera. His career took him from the Royal Air Force darkrooms to photography instructor roles in both the UK and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Outside work, Gareth is often found wandering Kapiti beaches and marine reserves, capturing nature and sharing his knowledge with anyone keen to learn.
