Starlit Refuge ✨

Capturing this composition has been a long-time goal of mine. I’ve stayed at Plateau Hut twice before during clear weather windows, but both times, the full moon made astrophotography nearly impossible. This time, however, everything aligned (quite literally) With the moon setting early, I was finally gifted perfect conditions to shoot these two panoramas under a brilliant star-filled sky.

These are just quick phone edits for now, as my current hard drive is full, but a new one is on the way! Once it arrives, I plan to revisit these images for a proper edit.

Film Photos from Franz Josef 🎞️ ✨

Worthy enough to post here as this has to be one of my proudest achievements to date. I captured these images on a little disposable (but reusable) type cameras as apart of my presentation for my Hard Ice Guiding Assessment. I can now call myself an NZMGA Hard Ice Guide!!! I also wonder if I’m the first openly trans person to become an offical NZ Mountain Guide 🤔🏳️‍⚧️

Taking these images were super enjoyable and really made me think about the best compositions and to not waste film. I made sure to use black and white film, as black and white images were the only option back in the late 1890s and early 1900s. My inspiration came from Dr. Ebenezer Teichelmann, but he had it way harder back in the day with 25+ kg of equipment (including fragile glass slides) to carry into the alpine.

So next time you’re out in the mountains, whether you’re using a smartphone or a professional camera, think about the legacy of those who came before—who carried heavy cameras up rugged peaks just for the chance to preserve a single moment in time.

Glacial Sunstar ✨

We lost direct sunlight onto the glacier around 3:30-4pm as it disappeared behind the mountain on the right in this image. Much to our surprise it peaked back out from behind the mountain around 6pm!!! A whole 2 hours later, super unexpected but such an amazing sight!!! I’ve never experienced seeing such a yellow glacier (scroll right to see a couple unedited phone images) it was truly a magical experience 🤩 This didn’t last long (only about 5mins) as the sun crept behind some clouds and went below the horizon!
