Milkyway Aurora | Invercargill

Couldn't resist going out last night as the sky was so clear and the weather perfectly still. This was taken near Awarua Bay just out of Invercargill. I wasn't facing South so the Aurora is pretty weak, but still looks cool I think!

Queenstown | Aurora

So amazing to witness and photograph this phenomena! I could see parts of it with the naked eye and see the light dancing around as a group of strangers connected with each other in awe of this amazing spectacle. This is a high-resolution panorama made up of five images taken at 1134hrs on 11.05.24.

Captured my first aurora!! What an adventure! I started heading out to Bluff just after sunset but could see I was heading towards cloudy sky, so I turned around and headed back towards Invercargill and out to Oreti Beach. I'd been there before but hadn't actually scouted the location properly so ended up clambering up and down sand dunes before eventually getting to the beach. The wind was feirce and cold. I sheltered my camera from the wind as I got these long exposure shots. Initially the aurora wasn't particularly spectacular and I'd been out in the cold for a couple of hours now so made my way back along the beach and back to the car. As I drove off towards home I came back into cellphone coverage and the aurora alert on my phone went off - the aurora was kicking off! I promptly turned around and drove straight onto the beach (yes you can do that and yes, I should've done this in the first place haha). It was now very clear that what I was capturing was in fact the aurora. I pointed my camera towards the dark starry skies and clicked the shutter, experiencing a dopamine rush of sorts as I waited the 10-20 seconds for the shot to be taken and the image revealed on the back of the screen. So exciting to see the intense greens and reds showing up on camera! I can see there are going to be many more crazy nights like this in future as I go to ridiculous lengths to capture this mysterious phenomena!

Waipapa Lighthouse | Southland

I ventured out into the cold, rain and wind last night in the hopes the cloud would clear and I might capture my first aurora photograph. The windswept clouds opened up briefly to reveal this starry backdrop and I was able to get this shot. No aurora though unfortunately - but I'll keep trying! There's something about Waipapa Point that I'm drawn to. A sacred place. Despite the conditions, I was toasty and warm inside my wet weather gear and enjoyed just being present there at that time listening to the waves crashing around me and the smell of the cool ocean air. You'll definitely be seeing more of this location from me in future!

Monkey Island | Southland

This was just a quick snap I took while out on a day trip from my new home here in Invercargill. Will definitely be planning a trip back to this location again soon. Also really excited to get out exploring the many more amazing places nearby and share these with you. I've still got quite a lot on in terms of getting myself settled here so won't be able to get out too much just yet but that will all change soon and you can expect to see more regular posts from me again. Thank you all for showing interest in my journey and following my work! :)

Wishing you all a safe and happy new year! Thanks for all your support and encouragement...am really enjoying sharing photos with you all! This photo was taken at about 9pm tonight. The camera shutter was open for 30 seconds making a dark photo look like daylight and capturing the headlights of a car travelling along the coast road. :)
