Julia Rae Photography & Art

Julia Rae Photography & Art An award-winning fine art photographer and Fellow of PSNZ In 2016 I gained my Licentiate Honours. I am currently a member of the Gisborne Camera Club.

Whether it’s the romance of a wedding, the personality in a portrait, or the atmosphere of a special event, I capture authentic, beautiful images that tell your unique story. I have been photographing for many years but when I found Photoshop my world became full of endless possibilities. I love to create Fine Art photography where each image is conceptualized and then I capture and collect image

s and props to craft my vision. I am member of the Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ) and in 2021 gained my Associateship Honours (APSNZ) with PSNZ. I have been a member of local photography clubs for over 20 years, since 2001. I have also had success in photographing Portraits, Nature and Landscapes and can be hired for weddings. Please contact me by private message if you would like to know more about my work. Julia Rae - APSNZ

Happy to see a red dot on one of my two images at the annual Gisborne Artists, Potters and Photographers Exhibition. Thank you to the purchaser. It is always heart warming to know my vision has resonated.
A great exhibition as so much variety in talent.

No surfer this time - just a simple wave but so much to ponder on. 🌊 I have spent this afternoon trying to print this with much trial and error. After ringing Epson and then a bit of Chat GPT advice (which was easier to understand than the technician!) I finally got the image to print beautifully on an A3 thick Ilford paper. So this will be available as an 11x14 print and also a framed print at The Aviary Collective on Wednesday.

The Campbell Black Browed Mollymawk taken while out fishing and the Toutouwai - North Island Robin - taken at Zealandia. Both images gained Honours when entered into the Gisborne Camera Club submissions for Nature.

I was happily surprised to learn that I have been awarded two Honours in the National Portrait Salon, run by the Tauranga Photographic Society, in the Creative Portrait section. 📸

One of those images is particularly special to me because it had been sitting in my head for quite a while before I finally got the opportunity to create it.

When my son was home on a break, he became my model — and Behind the Pain was actualised.

The title is a play on words: behind the pain… behind a pane.

The pane of glass represents the barriers and facades we can hide behind when we don't want others to see how we are really feeling. Behind it, the red paint obscures almost everything except the eye.

In the background, barely visible, are shadowy figures — some appearing to laugh, others almost tormented — representing the silent suffering that can be hidden beneath the surface.

Sometimes we only see what someone allows us to see.

The message behind the image is to look a little deeper, take the time to really see the person, and remember that we may never know what someone is carrying behind their facade.

I am incredibly pleased that an idea that had been in my mind for so long has not only come to life, but has been recognised with an Honour in the National Portrait Salon. ❤️

I have set myself a wee challenge to get up early 1x a week, watch the sunrise and just photograph for pleasure for a few hours. See what captures my eye. These were taken on Saturday.

I could have stayed and watched the waves, the surf for hours on Saturday. Took way too many photos - Love taking them but finding time to actually sort through them is another thing.

I entered 8 images and here are my other 4 entries in the NZAPA awards which gained Highly Commended's. Every entry is given a score alongside the award which is interesting feedback to see how they ranked and where in the 10 point Highly Commended range they actually did fall.

It is aways a bit uncomfortable putting your work out there to receive feedback publicly on images that have taken hours to conceptualise and create.. but that is how we grow. I recieved some great feedback (thank you judges) and was delighted this year to have 3 make the top 10. My biggest surprise was placing 4th in the Portrait section. Very grateful! So coming away with a 4th , 6th equal and 8th was a good achievment and up on last year where only 1 made the top 10.

Results are up on the Creative Focus website and WOW what a wonderful array of inpsiring & creative images. I had a few surprises. The competition was not run last year so I did enter a couple of my Fellowhip images.

I am super happy that The After Party won GOLD in the section "Everyday Surreal".

All the successful images are on the Creative Focus website and well worth a look. https://www.creative-focus.co.nz/salon/results/2026/2
