Yesterday I received the most beautiful phone call from a client.
I had gone to her home to photograph her headshot. Since I no longer have a studio, I now bring the studio experience to my clients — whether that is at their home, office, or wherever they feel most comfortable.
Before the shoot, we had already chatted about what she could wear, colours, and what might work best for her. But the truth is, once we are actually shooting, things can change. The light, the background, the colours, the camera — sometimes what we think will work beautifully in real life does not always translate the same on camera.
So I told her to have a few shirt options ready, and we would work through them together on the day.
When I arrived, I set up my lighting and camera, and we started the shoot. She also had the two most gorgeous dogs, and every time she went off to change, I got to play with them for a little bit — which honestly made the shoot even more special.
As we photographed, I could see she was nervous. Like so many of us women, she was worried about how she looked. Worried about her body. Worried about not feeling “good enough” in front of the camera.
And I kept reminding her: you are beautiful as you are.
Because this is something I feel so strongly about. It does not matter what size we are, how old we are, or how we think we look on a bad day. So often, the way we see ourselves is not the way others see us.
My job is not only to take a good photo.
My job is to use the right lighting, the right angles, the right direction, and most importantly, the right energy to help someone feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.
That evening, I sent her the gallery to choose from. She only needed one headshot, but she chose two images to be edited.
Then yesterday she called me.
She thanked me for the shoot. She told me she felt so much better about her photos. She loved them. And she now wants to choose more images.
And that, for me, is everything.
That is why I do what I do.
I want every client to walk away not only with professional images, but with a little more confidence in themselves. I want them to see what I see — a beautiful person, inside and out.
Sometimes the biggest thing standing in our way is simply the way we see ourselves.
And if I can help change that, even just a little, then I have done my job.
