She Hunts Op Shops Hi, I'm Anna ✨
Op shopping my way around
NZ & Australia. Christchurch-based. Howdy! Niche? It’s a wild, stinky, satisfying ride.

📷 onevelvetmorning.co.nz I’m Anna — and I LOVE to op shop 🌻

Photography is stitched into my soul — I’ve run my own creative, boho-style business Pixie Rouge Photography for over a decade now. I live in Ōtepoti - Dunedin, New Zealand, with my husband Sean and our pixie girl Francesca. Together, we roam the cou

ntryside in search of joy — staying in forest cabins, exploring dusty curio shops, and unearthing vintage treasures — while I document the magic and share it all with you. Totally. 🌴

I create Treasure Hunting & Forest Escape Guides — part travel journal, part op shop oracle — and they’re pretty unique (and very cool). You can find them at www.shehuntsopshops.com

Oh, and we also run Awamoa Portaloos 💩
Yep — portaloos, showers, septic tank cleaning, grease traps, and more. We service the lower South Island of NZ with rubber gloves, a good playlist, and questionable snacks.

We’ve bought a DVD of MacGyver ✨

And we’re watching it tonight as a family! 🕺🏻⭐️

Who else had a crush on MacGyver as a kid? 🙋🏼‍♀️
I had posters on my walls. 😂🙈
So did Sean 🤣🤣

Frankie is intrigued, which is basically parenting goals right there. 😂

We also watch Full House,
Mork and Mindy and Knight Rider,
and I’m desperately trying to find
The Wonder Years.

The 80s were the BEST. ⭐️

PS. MacGyver is the entire reason I got a golden palomino horse as a kid. 😂🐎

PPS. He is currently fixing a sulphuric acid leak with a chocolate bar. So, you know… excellent educational content. 🙌😂

PPPS. The sound overdubbing in Knight Rider ALONE is worth the rewatch. 😂

Watching Michael Knight walk down the street in sneakers while the soundtrack makes it sound like he’s stomping around in high heels will have you laughing together as a family for days!
👠😂

But honestly…

I think one of the secret cheats to slowing the chaos of a house with kids is going back to analog. 🕺📼

Screens, iPads, streaming services, devices… they are ENDLESS.

There’s no natural stopping point.

But a DVD?

It ends.

It literally stops.

And suddenly everyone gets up and goes and does something else. 😂

A few years ago we made a decision to have zero screens Monday–Friday, and honestly… life got GOOD. 🌼

We bought a DVD player and slowly collected our favourite old box sets so we could watch things together as a family.

MacGyver
Knight Rider
Mork & Mindy
Full House
Family Ties
The Nanny

Elite viewing only. 🤘😂

Most nights we pile onto the couch after dinner and watch TV together from about 5pm–6.30pm.

Then Frankie has free time in her room until 7.30, when she goes to bed with her audiobook playing from an actual CD like it’s 1999 again. 🙋🏼‍♀️🌸

And weekends have set screen time, which has worked beautifully too — because when something is limited, it becomes exciting.

And I honestly think watching TV with your kids is completely different from handing them an iPad.

One is:

“Here, disappear into this device for a while.”

The other is:

“Come sit next to me. Let’s watch this together.”

We laugh at the same bits.
We talk about what’s happening.
We explain things.
We sing the intro songs.
We get nostalgic.
Frankie discovers shows we loved when we were kids.

And then…

the episode ends.

There’s something really lovely about that.

Plus…

MACGYVER!!!!!

Like… COME ON. ✨🕺✨

I need your advice, friends.
And I think we need to have a discussion
about VACUUMING. 😂

I actually love vacuuming.

I'm a bit of a wizard at it. I enjoy the actual act of vacuuming, and then I REALLY enjoy basking in the glory of the freshly vacuumed floor.

There's something very satisfying about it.

BUT.

I've recently become aware that there are robots.

Not just little robots that bump around your house aimlessly.

I'm talking about ROBOT FLOOR SERVANTS.

These things will map your entire home, rugs, furniture and all, and then dutifully vacuum your floors while you do literally anything else.

Then they return to their little sleek black charging hub...

and switch themselves into mopping mode.

They then go around and MOP THE FREAKING FLOOR.

And when they're finished?

THEY CLEAN THEMSELVES.

I'm sorry, but once you acquire this knowledge, it becomes VERY difficult to continue vacuuming and mopping like some sort of Victorian housekeeper.

Because......now I know there's a tiny robot servant living in a sleek black cupboard in someone's house, quietly cleaning their floors while they're off living their life.

And honestly...

I WANT ONE.

The other day, while Frankie was away at camp, I spent about two hours vacuuming behind everything, under every bed and along all the door skirtings.

Then I spent another hour and a half scrubbing the floors in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

They were properly dirty, so this wasn't a quick little swish.

We're talking:

bucket of hot water + vinegar + scrubbing brush + on my hands and knees + wiping everything dry with rags.

And yes.

It was satisfying.

Yes, it was necessary.

Yes, we all do it.

Yes, I actually enjoy it.

But...

I enjoyed it BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT THE ROBOT.

😂

So now I'm having a little existential crisis about household cleaning.

Because I think I've reached a point in my life where I'm just...

quietly over vacuuming and mopping.

And here's where Sean comes in.

I mentioned my robot floor-servant fantasy to him the other day.
* His mind went to ALL THE PLACES! lol

He's recently started a full-time job — WEEEEEE! 🕺 so he's busy, and we haven't had a massive discussion about it yet.

But interestingly...

Sean has been thinking about vacuuming too.

His solution?

A really good cordless vacuum.

His theory is that he'll vacuum WAY more often if he can just grab it, vacuum, and put it away — rather than dragging out the Miele, plugging the thing in and navigate the plugs and getting it all happening.

And he's probably right.

He's also been eyeing up a good mop-and-bucket system.

Meanwhile I'm over here thinking:

OR...
..we could employ a robot.

😂

And yes, I understand I’d still need to get down on my hands and knees to do the corners, the skirtings and under stuff.

But, the robot could keep things orderly the rest of the time, yeah?

SO I NEED TO KNOW.

Do you have one of these robot floor servants and how do you mop your floors!?

If you do:

WHAT BRAND?

HOW GOOD IS IT REALLY?

Does it actually vacuum properly?

Does it mop properly?

Does it get confused by rugs and furniture?

Does it genuinely save you time?

And most importantly...

DO YOU LOVE IT?

And for those of you with a cordless vacuum:

I refuse to buy crap, are these things built to last like a Miele floor beast?

Do you use it more than you used your old plug-in vacuum?

Does your husband/partner actually vacuum more because it's easy to grab?

And finally...

If money was absolutely no object...

WOULD YOU BUY THE ROBOT FLOOR SERVANT?

I feel like this is important research. 😂

Got my blues jacket on! 💙🎶

Driving home from therapy today,
I thought to myself, I’m going to do something different today.

Then Neil Young came on my playlist… and suddenly I wanted to play my harmonica! 😂

So here’s some Sonny Boy Williamson blues, coming at ya from my harp this fine Friday. 🎶💨

I totally forgot I could play this thing!

Thank you, Lucinda Light
for reminding me to get it out. ❤️

Your impulse buy the other day
made my day today!
That’s cosmic right there. ✨
Love and light,

These are my latest second-hand
curtains and I am IN LOVE. 😍

They’re silky, golden, slightly cosmic in the best possible way, and they’ve completely transformed this little corner.

And LOOK at that lamp!
I actually put it together in bits.
A beautiful follower gifted me the lamp stand, and when I got it home I popped my own shade on top… and somehow they were just meant to be together. ✨

Then Sean wandered home with that gorgeous flower artwork he found for $5 in an op shop. 😂

And the little green genie you see…
I know you see it! 😂
That was $15 from a treasure store in Ōamaru and it might be my cutest little find EVER!

Honestly, this is why I love second-hand decorating.
You don't have to find the perfect room in one shop, you build it piece by piece, treasure by treasure, until somehow all the weird little finds start belonging together. 🧡

$50 second-hand curtains.
Gifted lamp.
Foraged lamp shade.
$5 op-shop art.
$15 Genie treasure.
One very happy treasure hunter. 🌿

Seven months in our new little home! 🏡♥️

I’ve been pottering away in our new little rental, slowly making her ours, and she really is such a beautiful little home.
We truly love her! 🥹♥️

Here are a few before & afters
as we slowly add our own little flair. ✨

PS — I’m about to share a reel showing how I changed the curtains over! 🕺🙋🏼‍♀️⭐️

It’s totally doable in a rental, and I’ll spill all my tips on how I did it without making permanent changes soon. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Because honestly… we’ve gotta get rid of as much corporate boardroom grey curtain energy as humanly possible. 😂😂

Give me colour!
Give me softness!
Give me a home
that doesn’t look like an accounting firm! 🙌🏼🌸

8 OP SHOPS IN A ROW
WOW WEEEE, RANGIORA! 🤯

Oh my goodness gracious me…
Rangiora is INSANE for op shopping, you guys! 😍

I nipped out there on Wednesday, stupidly thinking an hour would be plenty of time to whip around the op shops.

Boy oh boy, was I wrong. 😂

I had to come back the following day to finish the job!

Because can you believe Rangiora has EIGHT op shops?!
And honestly… each and every one was SO bloody cool. 🥹

I’m in love.

Not only does Rangiora have all these ops, but it’s a beautiful little town with loads of stunning cafes, laneways and second hand boutiques hiding everywhere! ⭐️

I’ve been trying to think of a way to showcase all the op shops here in Rangiora and, to be honest, I think I’m just going to have to hit you with a massive photo dump! 📸 🙈
* the last image has some Pixie tips 🧚

I’ve also got a bunch of footage I captured while I was out there, so I’ll share that with you soon too.

But for now…

Folks — THIS IS RANGIORA! 🙌

And I have to say, the quality of the clothing in this town was purely exceptional.

Seriously. What an absolute GEM of a place to op shop.

If you haven’t been out there yet…
YOU NEED TO GET IN ON THIS ONE. 🛍️✨

Love,
Anna x
