No. 4 Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre
• Christchurch’s Convention Centre was a cornerstone project to fill a major gap after the 2011 earthquakes damaged the original building built on a different site.
• Te Pae means “gathering place” in Te Reo Maori.
• The 28,000 square building was designed by Woods Bagot with Warren and Mahoney.
• It took 4 years to build and was opened in 2022.
• The building’s facade is made up of 43,000 individually numbered tiles.

No. 3 The Trams
• Tram No. 152, the Boon, is named after the tramcar building company Boon & Co.
• It was built in the early 1900s.
• Electric tramways made their debut on 5th June, 1905 and finally stopped running on 11th September, 1954.
• The new city loop was opened on 4th February, 1995.
• There are now 18 stops and takes 50 minutes to complete the full circuit.

No. 2 - Mill Island
• Pioneer miller, Daniel Inwood purchased the island, in the middle of the Avon River near Hereford St bridge, in 1855. Canterbury
was then seen as the main wheat growing province.
• A flour mill was constructed in 1859.
• In 1888, when the original Inward Mill ordinance of 30 years expired, the mill machinery was removed and the buildings converted into housing for homeless men and then as a night shelter until 1895.
• In 1897 the island was sold to Christchurch city Council and buildings removed.
• In 1898 Christchurch Beautifying Association had its first undertaking planting the island with trees and building a rock wall.
• In 1997 the decorative waterwheel was built to commemorate the past use of the island.

I have a new challenge this year: exploring and capturing the beauty and history of Christchurch, NZ, and surrounds. So much to learn and explore!

No. 1 - Christchurch War Memorial: Bridge of Remembrance

• On 24th July, 1919, a Christchurch lady, Lilian May Wyn Irwin, wrote to The Press suggesting a war memorial be build in memory of those who fought in The Great War.
• Architects Prouse and Gummer won the architectural competition to design the memorial.
• The foundation stone was laid on ANZAC Day, April 25th 1923
• The Bridge of Remembrance was officially opened on Armistice Day November 11th, 1924 by His Excellency, Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Jellicoe of Scapa, O.C.B., a.M., O.C.V.O.
