Amoenoboletus mcrobbii

One of only 20 observations on for this species in NZ.

A week spent offline in Butcher's Flat along the Wakamarina River and I reckon this was my favorite find (one of the more photogenic boletes I've come across!)

Here are my Top 9 🍄 📸 from 2025 (in no particular order).

1.) Gliophorus viridis
2.) Undescribed Morchella sp.
3.) Cyttaria gunnii / Māori Beech Strawberry
4.) Cruentomycena viscidocruenta / Ruby Bonnet - (After learning that C. orientalis glowed in Japan and Malaysia, I was excited to discover that the mycelium of this species is bioluminescent here in New Zealand.)
5.) Ileodictyon cibarium / White basket fungus
6.) Mycena podocarpi - (After noticing the maroon-marginated gills, I experimented and found that the mycelium is bioluminescent in this species.)
7.) Cheimonophyllum roseum - (A rare one I found in Nelson Lakes, with only a few observations on iNaturalist in NZ.)
8.) Hypocreopsis amplectens / Tea-tree Fingers - (One of the rarest finds of the year - a critically endangered species, with only two other sites previously known in the country where this has been recorded.)
9.) Hydnum mcnabbianum

It’s been nearly one year since being back in New Zealand, and I’m stoked for what 2026 brings! Happy New Year to all! 🎊

A fraction of the fungi I found this year in New Zealand’s South Island (mainly around the Marlborough/Tasman region).

Wishing everyone a happy holiday and New Year!

Not many mushrooms out now given it’s summer in NZ, but managed to spot this lone, dark blue Entoloma sp. growing at the base of a boulder in St. Arnaud last week.

I’ve finally put together a calendar featuring some of my favourite fungi finds from this year in NZ. Each image was photographed in the bush - crouched down in the moss, crawling and poking around fallen logs, and chasing those tiny moments of magic on the forest floor.
