Sad sad news, Barry introduced me to punk when he played the S*x Pistols on his radio show back in the 70’s and then made contact with me far more recently to say nice things about the book. RIP.
It's with immense sadness that we mark the passing today of one of the giants of New Zealand broadcasting, Barry Jenkin – known to a generation as simply Dr. Rock.
Barry passed away at 4.30 today. His daughter Andra posted: He lived exactly as he chose to. To the full, larger than life, belligerently listening to punk. Barry Jenkin, aka Dr. Rock, is dead. His legend lives on.
John Dix wrote in his AudioCulture bio:
“Good evening, citizens.” Those words resonate with a generation of NZ music lovers and will be forever associated with Barry Jenkin (widely regarded as NZ’s John Peel, champion of all music considered left-field), the broadcaster who was once one of the most influential people in the NZ music industry.
Our thoughts, hugs and, yes, love go out to Andra, his family and to his countless friends and fans for whom Barry, throughout his life, always found time to chat and laugh with. And what a mighty laugh that was ...
