When I was a kid, we used to spend Christmas Day at Muriwai for the day. We’d make the journey over from the other coast, highlighter yellow and orange wetsuits, and a picnic of filled rolls, strawbs, chippies, and raro in the boot.
After lunch under the trees up in the park area, we’d run/hop down the sand to the beach as fast as possible. That sand was always so hot, it felt cold.
We got boogie boards for Christmas. My twin got a blue one, older sis got a yellow one, and I got a pink one. Maybe that’s why I chose Nancy? I still remember waking up to them at the foot of our beds, lovingly wrapped by Santa in…BlakSak rubbish bags. I guess it’s the only thing that fit?
We had so much fun. You could hear my mum woohooooooing through the whitewash from the dunes, dad would be swimming about in his striped Speedo’s, and we would spend the arvo trying to dodge all the other kids in between flags.
I still remember warming up on the sand with salty snot dripping out my nose, wondering what all the little black dots were out the back…what are they doing? Why aren’t they between the flags? Why are they all in black?….what are they waiting for? Now I know 😁
I didn’t know what surfing was back then, I didn’t grow up in a surf family. To me, boogie boarding was the way 🤓
Even after years travelling and living overseas, the lifestyle here is still the best. Beach, bare feet (maybe not right now 😁), fresh air, lush green views, and a lot of choice for waves. Bliss 🌊☀️
