Rocio's 6-year-old wanted a REAL mermaid, and on Google she found Making Mermaids, the only company with a mermaid who actually looked real, with a beautiful realistic tail, not a costume.

When Merlina arrives at a party, she arrives as a mermaid, and she stays one right up until she waves goodbye.

She never once steps out of the story.

The Mermaid Tryout answers one big question: is mermaiding for you?

You get to find out before you commit to anything bigger.

You arrive curious.

You leave knowing exactly how it feels to flip, glide and shimmer in a tail, because you did it yourself.

No diving experience needed. Diver or non-diver, young or young-at-heart, mermaid or merman (or anything in between), everyone aged 5 and up is welcome to swish along.

A certified mermaid instructor guides you the whole way, so all you need to bring is your curiosity and a happy willingness to put your lovely face in the water.

Spring has arrived in New Zealand, and it feels like a gentle season to try something new in the water. 🌊

Mermaiding comes with a real certificate at the end. 🧜♀

The PADI Certified Mermaid Course gives you formal, internationally recognised certification in water skills and mermaid artistry.

It begins with knowledge development. Then come at least two water skill sessions that build dynamic mermaid skills beyond the Basic Mermaid course.

Along the way, you learn many of the skills that make mermaiding an underwater, self-expressive art, separate from other types of diving.

If you're 10 or older and sure you want to be a mermaid, you can start right here. Basic Mermaid is already included, so there's no need to take it first.

Here in New Zealand, our courses are taught by Fiona Ayerst, known as Mermaid Fi. She is a 30-year PADI Scuba Instructor and a PADI Mermaid Instructor.

The course is 490 NZD.

We grew up hearing that the sea around here has its own people...

Stories like that drift up and down this coastline, passed along at the beach and around the bach.

Out on the West Coast, where the sand runs black and the surf rolls in wild and grey, it's easy to believe them. 🌊

Some stories stay with you long after the jandals are dusted off.

Most people pick the wrong mermaid tail for their skill level. Here's what to look for before you buy.

Swipe through for the quick version:

🌊 Fabric vs. Silicone
Fabric tails are lightweight and beginner-friendly. They are easier to put on and ideal for pool parties or casual wear. Silicone tails look stunning but require stronger swimming skills.

🌊 Monofin Matters
The monofin inside the tail controls how you swim. A stiff monofin gives power but demands technique. Beginners do better with a flexible or removable monofin.

🌊 Size It Right
A tail that is too loose will slip and restrict movement. Measure your hips and foot span before ordering. Most brands include a size chart, use it every time.

The right tail makes every swim more fun and more safe.
