The Black and White Box

The Black and White Box The lab that loves your film just as much as you do. Helping you to shoot film affordably and know all you can about the medium that you love.

Founded by an avid film photographer with years of experience in processing, Lorenzo was himself and his friends go-to when someone needed a develop and scan. As film photography begun to flourish once again, friends turned into friend's of friends, Lorenzo enlisted his partner Caitlin to assist him and before he knew it, The Black and White Box was born. TB&WB is an Auckland based, New Zealand wi

de film development company made for photographers, by photographers. Specialising in B&W as well as C-41, we use top of range processors and scanners at their optimum to ensure the highest quality results are achieved every time. In a world where you can take hundreds of photos in a matter of seconds, film photography is an extremely exciting and rewarding way to capture simple moments in everyday life, right up to creating beautiful work for publication and exhibition. As the industry slowly ceased to evolve due to lack of interest many years ago, the price to shoot film has increased whilst the knowledge and technical understanding involved in the industry has slowly decreased. For this reason we aim to retain this precious knowledge by helping to educate others and most importantly, keep our prices reasonable so that it can still be affordable to shoot on a format we all love.

Today we’re sharing a few photos by from Wilt Chamberlain’s former Bel Air mansion in LA. Shot on Portra 160 with a Nikon F5, the film was processed by us at The Black and White Box.

Completed in 1971, this iconic home was designed as a custom build for Chamberlain during his time with the LA Lakers. Designed for the 7.1-foot basketballer, the house has an exaggerated sense of scale that translates beautifully in photographs.

Recently we farewelled Ziggy and Ethan from The Black and White Box with a lawn party.

Ziggy joined us in 2023 and was an integral part of setting up our framing department.

Ethan started in 2021. He ran our B&W and E-6 processing, and kept half the lab running as our unofficial handyman.

Between them, they’ve processed thousands of orders. We’ll miss you both. You touched our hearts along with thousands of rolls of film. Thanks for all the hard mahi and everything you brought to the lab.

Good luck out there 🖤

The Black and White Box and PCL Imaging recently had the privilege of working with on ‘Taharaki Skyside’, which represents Aotearoa at this year’s 61st Venice Biennale.

In this series, Pardington (Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Ngāti Kahungunu, Clan Cameron of Erracht) brings together large-scale photographs of taxidermied birds from museum collections, reflecting on colonial histories of collecting, ecological loss, and the cultural and spiritual significance of manu (birds) within te ao Māori.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Fiona for many years through PCL and now The Black and White Box, and supporting the production of ‘Taharaki Skyside’ through printing and mounting has been a real honour. Produced as archival inkjet prints on Ilford Galerie Cotton Rag 310gsm, a lot of care went into making sure the manu still felt alive in the final works. Jacob has been working with Fiona on this project for about a year, and it has been a joy to support her in this process. Given the age of many of the specimens, colour and detail had to be carefully brought back so the birds could be seen as they might be in nature again. The Whēkau became one of the favourites in the lab, with its bold, striking presence.

Congratulations to Fiona on this achievement, and thank you for trusting us with this special project. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing it together and onto the international stage.

We visited the Aotearoa Art Fair last weekend and were excited to see so many projects we’ve worked on out in the world, including ‘Two Waters’, by Ngahuia Williams. Exhibited as part ‘Kurutai’, a show curated by Chantel Mathews, Ngahuia’s two photographic works were created to sit alongside and support the uku pieces within the context of Kurutai waters. As she describes them, “my pieces being the first part of the journey in its purity before they head towards the moana.”

These works were photographed by Ngahuia on film and printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, mounted and framed by The Black and White Box.
