Time and weather stood still on our final morning at Lake Camp.

The falling temperatures overnight gave way to crisp edges of the frozen lake, the snow-laden trees, the light shimmering on the varying surfaces. It brought a bright and breathtaking end to adventure chasing the cold through peaks and valleys.

Starting the day guided by the dawn light, the mind seeking clarity in the water, and matching my breath to the tide.

Guided by weeks of planning and wild determination, we tracked across clues and uneven surfaces, following our instinct and the trickle of the water - and wandered into a place we could never dream up ourselves.

Four trips, countless stairs, and thousands of kilometres back and forth (in this economy!) - the longest road for a beautiful, temporary moment.

Anyone who’s ventured into this region knows the maunga specialises in teasing, so it’s no surprise this only happened after a 1-hour wait watching clouds rolling in, abandoning our post, and a mad dash from halfway up the board walk because the maunga also teaches us to never give up.

Good things come to those who wait—but the great ones take a little longer.
