Exhausted after a brutal shift, but there is no room for excuses when your brother has your back. Real motivation is tough love.

🏉 THE FUTURE OF NEW ZEALAND RUGBY — WHERE TO FROM HERE?

NZ Rugby has backed the current Super Rugby Pacific and NPC formats. But what does that mean for the future of our grassroots game?

Our clubs, volunteers, coaches and communities are the foundation of rugby. Without them, there is no pathway to the professional level.

So, are we getting the balance right?

• Are the current competition formats sustainable long-term?
• How do we keep our best talent in New Zealand rather than losing them overseas?
• Are grassroots clubs getting enough support and investment?
• Should we explore greater private investment in professional rugby, and how do we protect the community game in the process?

There’s no shortage of opinions, but what does the evidence tell us about viewership, participation and the long-term health of the game?

💬 If you could change one thing about New Zealand rugby over the next 10 years, what would it be?

Keen to hear from club administrators, coaches, players and supporters. Let’s have a constructive conversation about where we go from here.

Imagine being 17 years old, making a final with your local rugby club, and having the whole neighbourhood turn up to support you.

Darin Housham remembers doing exactly that with Mount Wellington Rugby Football Club.

The team handed out flyers, got the word out, and the community showed up.

That’s grassroots rugby at its best.

Does your club still have that kind of connection with its local community?

Rugby shaped Brandon's values, friendships, and journey through school, from Cornwall Park Primary to Auckland Grammar, where teachers and coaches left a lasting impact.

Before the professional contracts, before the recognition, there were two jobs and a dream.

Sama Malolo gives us a glimpse into the work and sacrifice that went on behind closed doors while he chased his opportunity in rugby.

How many people do you reckon see the sacrifices behind the scenes before a player finally makes it?

Putting out the pads. Cleaning the change rooms. Getting the club ready for everyone else.

For some of the old-school players, these things were just part of being at the club. Nobody needed to ask.

Do you reckon that same mentality still exists in grassroots rugby today?

Romania might not be the first country that comes to mind when you think about playing rugby overseas.

But are players overlooking opportunities outside the traditional rugby destinations?

Would you take the opportunity if the contract was right?

Reflecting on the path from youth to adulthood, it is clear that consistency matters. Whether through sports or other disciplines, sticking with a structured commitment often builds the resilience needed for better decision-making later in life.

I still see the same patterns emerging today. It is a reminder that the habits we form early on lay the foundation for the choices we make as adults. Would love your perspective on how we can better support the next generation in staying the course.

That time a fundraiser went completely sideways. A trip to Australia, a gambling night, and a very awkward visit from the police.

Every pro athlete should spend a year back at their amateur roots. Giving back to the game is how you truly fall in love with it all over again.
