I’ve decided that every Thursday I’m going to share an older photo and a little of the story behind it.

For me, photography has always been about more than just taking photos. It’s about the adventures, the mates, the places I get to see and the memories made along the way. Looking back through older photos often brings all those memories flooding back!

This photo was taken in 2017 and is still one of my favourite photos.

It’s a sunrise from the top of Mount Maunganui. One of my best mates came over early that morning and, along with my then 9 year old son, we headed up in the dark to catch the sunrise.

We had an absolute blast taking photos, and my mate even trusted my son with one of his expensive cameras to have a go himself!

It was one of those mornings that had everything. Great company, an awesome adventure, a beautiful sunrise and plenty of memories.

And that’s exactly why I love photography.

Recently, my wife and I headed down to Gisborne for a weekend away, and it was also a pretty special trip for another reason. I finally got to meet Hannah Jairam Photography - LPSNZ in person after knowing her online and studying alongside her for the past four years!

While much of the country was enjoying beautiful sunshine, Gisborne had something completely different in store for us. On the way down, we heard that one of the roads had been closed because of flooding. We decided to keep going and hope it cleared, and thankfully it did!

The drive into Gisborne was very wet, and it was obvious the area had seen plenty of rain. With the weather looking pretty wild, there was really only one thing to do... get the camera out!

I managed to capture these two shots. The first looking out over Gisborne city, and the second at Wainui Beach, where we were staying.

Despite the weather, we had an awesome weekend away. Plenty of laughs, great company and, of course, some photography thrown in!

But did the weather eventually improve?

Well... you’ll just have to wait and see. 😉

Exploring the tracks around Lake Rotopounamu, I came across these tiny little mushrooms hiding amongst the forest floor.

They were seriously hard to spot, but once I found them, I knew I had to get the macro lens out!

I captured a focus stack of around 50 photos for each mushroom, then blended them together to create one sharp image.

A lot of patience for something so small, but definitely worth the effort!

I parked myself overlooking the Mahuia Rapids, hoping to capture the Milky Way lined up perfectly with the river.

I captured this long exposure just after sunset, then sat and waited for nightfall. As it got darker, I fired off a couple of test shots to see what was happening in the sky and noticed the clouds had started rolling in.

About 15 minutes later, I spotted the first signs of fog drifting in. Five minutes after that, I decided it was time to head back to the road.

The fog came in FAST and thick, completely ruining my plans. So I gave up, packed up and headed back to Turangi for Chinese takeaways.

Not quite the Milky Way shot I was hoping for, but the Chinese was a pretty good consolation prize! 😂

I captured this long exposure while standing on State Highway 47 and decided to convert it to black and white.

I love a good black and white image that lets the textures, tones and details speak for themselves. Sometimes taking away the colour lets you see the landscape in a completely different way.

When I'm photographing a sunrise or sunset, I always make a point of turning around. Sometimes the light behind you is just as incredible, if not even more beautiful, than the sunrise or sunset itself.

These two photos were taken from the same spot on State Highway 47. It was one of those evenings where the whole sky put on a show, no matter which direction you looked.

This one's pretty special!

Hannah Jairam Photography - LPSNZ gave me this Toki Pounamu as a graduation gift after I completed my Diploma in Photography in June. She said the colours reminded her of a New Zealand beach, which tied in perfectly with my love of photographing landscapes.

I've learned that being gifted Pounamu carries special significance in Māori culture, and that the Toki symbolises strength, perseverance, and the pursuit of mastering your craft.

Hannah and I have done this Diploma together over the last four years. Pushing each other and sharing in our wins and defeats. Oh, and trying to outdo each other in each assignment! 😂

Thank you, Hannah. I appreciate the thought you have put into selecting this gift. I'll wear it with pride, and it'll always remind me of your friendship, this milestone, and the journey that's still ahead!

I was out chasing the sunset on Highway 47 when these clouds caught my eye. They were absolutely stunning as they drifted over the hills.

Photography has changed the way I see the world. It's made me notice the little details I used to overlook, and cloud formations like this are one of them. There's something special about being out with a camera and stumbling across moments like these.

Sometimes the unexpected ends up being the highlight of the evening.

I headed up Bruce Road on Ruapehu with Shane's Shots Photography to find a good location to line up the Milky Way. It wasn't quite where we'd hoped it would be, but we stopped anyway to capture it rising over one of the ridges.

When you're in a dark location like this, it's hard not to be in awe of the Milky Way. Being able to see it so clearly with your own eyes is something special. I often find myself forgetting to keep photographing because I'm simply standing there taking it all in! 😂
