Hidden just outside Motueka, in the quiet of the Mutueka Ward, lies Te Puna Tai o Riuwaka Resurgence, a place you're unlikely to stumble upon unless someone lets you in on the secret.
Spending time in Nelson searching for something different, avoiding the well-worn postcard locations? I was guided here by a friend. At first, it feels almost too subtle. A short walk beneath a dense green canopy. A gentle stream. Nothing demanding attention.
But then you notice it.
The water doesn't just flow; it emerges, clear and alive, straight from the belly of the mountain. Ancient, constant, and quietly powerful. And suddenly, the challenge becomes clear: how do you capture something that isn't trying to impress you, but instead invites you to slow down and see?
This image is the result of that pursuit. A single frame, carefully composed to balance the movement of water, the weight of moss-covered stones, and the soft light filtering through native forest. Shot on a Sony A7RV with a 24? 70mm f/2.8 GMII lens, using a 10-stop ND filter to stretch time into a one-second exposure, the scene transforms. turning flowing water into something almost dreamlike, while keeping the surrounding detail sharp and grounded.
The story of this photo isn't just about a location. It's about the quiet reward of going off-track, trusting local knowledge, and taking the time to truly see a place? not just visit it.
