Incredibly happy to announce that I’ve won the 'Aurora Australis' Category of the ‘Skywatcher Astrophotographer of The Year 2024’

Blown away would be an understatement and after a very difficult start to the year with loosing my Dad and 4 months off of photography, my achievements since then have been a very welcome change.

Thanks so much to the Judge Adrien Louis Mauduit of Night Lights Films and the Sky-Watcher Australia team for this honour. Beyond words… except these ones! lol

Well done to all that entered and the other winners your works outstanding!

Cheers to for the support and comments, they are invaluable to me and to this journey that I'm on!

31-10-24 - Ohau

A day time image for a change! Exploring around Lake Oahu yesterday, this is looking toward Lake Ohau Skifield, Ben Ohau Ranges and Swan Lagoon. The dramatic sky lit up for a brief time so quickly grabbed some panos!

Started putting together Timelapse's from the 11th G5 Storm.
Finding some great stills hiding amongst the thousands of images, I'll post the first Timelapse off this scene shortly.

11-10-24 / 23:17 / Poolburn / A bit more 'Raspberry Ripple'

I exhibited some work at the Wanaka Art Exhibition tonight and got the usual questions, 'How do you get all the colour in your images?' and 'Where does all the colour come from when you don't see it in the sky?' and 'How much photoshopping has been done to make it look like this?' which I don't mind as I love to talk about anything Astro and the Exhibition was a fantastic experience to be a part of but I try to explain how much more sensitive camera sensors are compared to our own perceived experience of the night sky and I feel it often falls on deaf ears!

Interested to hear other Astrophotographers experiences and answers in these situations!?

Image for example, its a single frame from a Timelapse of the G5 storm under Altocumulus cloud on the 11-10-24, I haven't touched the Saturation, Vibrance, Colour Balance or Calibration. I dropped highlights, nudged Whites, Exposure and Contrast and evened out some dark areas with local radial filters and vignettes!

Getting through the panos! This is when things were starting to get interesting and of course the clouds were getting worse so playing around with some Moon Selfies between photographing the the panos was a must! lol

11-10-24 / 21:06 - 21:14 / Poolburn Dam

This pano was photographed at the end of Nautical Twilight into the very start of Astronomical Twilight. This strange Jelly Fish like blob cloud is visible as the whole formation before it quickly dissipated. Still confused about this having not seen anything like it before and still no closer to any ideas about it, so if you do please let me know!

In this pano STEVE is evident in the east and was bright to the naked eye even in Nautical Twilight and he looks like he’s transitioning into a SAR Arc which you can also see to the west! The Galactic Kiwi overseeing events and Venus trying to hide behind the Blob Cloud.
